A tiny country produced half of the mathematical geniuses of the 20th century.

To an unrecognized extent, it was coffee shop culture. Hungary gave us von Neumann, Erdős, Teller, Szilard, and many others. Scientists called them "the Martians" because their brilliance seemed otherworldly.

It was in the Budapest coffee shops where mathematicians gathered. Where problems were discussed openly. Where young people could observe and join. Where intellectual passion was the social currency.

The Minta school created a culture of mathematical problem-solving. Students competed in mathematics journals. The brightest minds mentored the next generation in cafes, not classrooms.

We look at exceptional achievement and assume exceptional genes. Usually, we are looking at an exceptional culture.

The environment that produces world-class thinking has consistent features: immersion from a young age, visible role models, peer cultures that reward intellectual engagement, and opportunity to practice with real problems.

Classrooms with a standardized curriculum and age segregation produce none of these features.

The Martians were not born on Mars. They were raised in a culture that valued what they would become.

We could create such cultures again. We choose not to because we believe standardized schooling is the only way to educate children.

A lot of people have asked me if I will get involved in the NYC mayor race by supporting a candidate that can defeat Zohran Mamdani. TBH, I’m torn and undecided. Like every other city run by democrats, NYC is a broken kleptocracy. Taxes are astronomical and services are pathetic to nonexistent. Anarchy and socialism are the next logical steps in this story arc. It's what the people of NYC have been asking for for years and it looks like it's what they are about to get. Trying to fight against this tide seems like throwing good money after bad.

It appears things will have to get worse in NYC before they get better. The Zoomers and Millennials need a refresher on the outcome of Marxism and socialism. They are too young to remember the crack and crime epidemic and murder sprees of the late 80's and early 90's. The squeegee men, graffiti, mugging, lawlessness, chaos, and pandemonium. Streets that were too unsafe to walk alone at night or even during the day. Getting mugged on the way to and from school was not just a rite of passage, it was an inevitability.

The Wall Streeters, financiers, and hedge funders have been too busy working on their fishponds and climbing the rungs of polite society to remember to protect the system that allowed them to achieve their success in the first place and allowed New York City to once become the greatest city in the world. Not ruffling feathers was more important than questioning the ideological insanity being taught in the private schools and universities that they sent their kids to. All that mattered was fitting in and getting invited to the right dinner parties.

Now their kids are indoctrinated NPCs, always protesting and supporting the current thing. Like their parents, they too want to fit in. To do so, they unironically exchange bromides and platitudes on the benefits of socialism over rosé brunches in the West Village. Because their friends hate America and capitalism, they do too. It never dawns on them that their lifestyle and studio apartment that their parents subsidize are all made possible because of capitalism.

This delusional thinking was ingrained in them at an early age by institutions that were captured by insane ideology and left unchecked by their grossly negligent parents. Instead of providing their children with immunity from stupid and provably bad ideas that have only led to misery and death throughout history, these parents shrugged it off as kids will be kids.

Now these kids are adults who can vote, but are totally unequipped to do so. In many ways it’s not their fault. From their parents, they learned some combination of magical thinking, preference falsification, and an inability to stand up for anything greater than themselves. As a result, they never learned how to think critically or independently. They never learned the value of Western civilization so they don't understand why, or know how, to fight for it.

Sometimes the only way to learn something is to learn it the hard way. Sometimes the only way to learn the value of what you have is to lose it. If that’s the case, Marxism and socialism might just be what the doctor ordered.

I’ve just returned to Britain from Hungary, where I spent a few days giving talks to students, politicians, and members of the public.

Whenever you mention Hungary among a certain group in London —think SW1 Westminster, the BBC, Financial Times, Oxbridge—people tend to lose their minds.

‘Hungary!?’ they say, ‘you mean that rather odd country in Eastern Europe that’s very conservative and falling out with everybody in the European Union!?”

I first experienced this reaction last summer when, amid the Southport atrocities, I dared to point out that the country I was visiting and which Western elites like to criticise —a very stable, a very secure, and a very peaceful Hungary—looked utterly different to the country I was returning to.

Because unlike Hungary, Britain was on fire.

Widespread rioting and protests after the Southport atrocity had become an unavoidable symbol of intense public concern about things that are only significant in Hungary because they are absent —mass uncontrolled immigration, broken borders, radical Islamism, Pakistani Muslim rape gangs, and the murder of children by the descendants of recent immigrants.

Nonetheless, my mere suggestion that perhaps Hungary has got some things right that Britain has got badly wrong generated an incredibly hostile response from British elites, reflecting an arrogance and snobbishness that is rife among that class.

Indeed, for much of the last fifteen years there’s been an assumption among elites in Britain that something has gone ‘badly wrong’ with Hungary.

But based on what I witnessed and was asked at events last week, I’m here to tell you that the opposite is true.

Because as far as many Hungarians are concerned, it is Britain, it is England, it is us, who got things badly wrong, who made a series of disastrous policy choices they are determined to avoid, and who are, in the words of one person I encountered, “losing our country”.
