Universal & Bitcoin

Bitcoin is defined by its users, not by any central authority. Its censorship resistance lies in the freedom of choice, the capacity for consensus, and the diversity of implementations.

We want to reaffirm that Universal Protocol has no vocation to “spam” Bitcoin, nor to create attack vectors against the network. On the contrary, we are committed to using Bitcoin for what it was built: a peer-to-peer network for the transfer of value.

Our interpretation of “value” is broader. Inspired by the early statements of Hal Finney, by Vitalik’s attempt to expand programmability, and by the undeniable success of BRC-20 in 2023, we believe that tokenization and fungible ledgers are not noise but adoption. BRC-20 demonstrated it: tons of users interacted with Bitcoin because of its clarity and simplicity.

Universal Protocol continues this path. It does not replace Bitcoin’s monetary policy, nor its consensus rules. It leverages existing primitives like OP_RETURN to create human-readable, modular transaction messages that can be indexed and verified openly. Universal transactions are not waste: they are explicit, compact, and designed to align with Bitcoin’s long-term health.

Simplicity is our ethos. Our indexer, Simplicity, proves that universal accounting can live on Bitcoin without compromising security or consensus. We encourage all users and developers to see Universal not as an external imposition, but as a natural extension of Bitcoin’s peer-to-peer vision, a new accounting system, fully anchored in Bitcoin’s philosophy.

Blacknode is not here for speculation or noise. We are here to build a durable protocol, open-source and universal, that will allow Bitcoin to remain not only money, but the settlement layer for a new generation of financial primitives.
