On 21 July 1980, during the Moscow Summer Olympics, Italian gay activist Enzo Francone handcuffed himself to a crowd barrier near the Kremlin Wall in Red Square, in protest at the Soviet law that punished homosexuality with up to five years' imprisonment.

KGB officers swiftly tackled him and carried him away, and he was later seen being kicked on the floor of a security office.

Francone was quickly expelled from the country.

His lone protest, staged in the heart of a hostile superpower, remains one of the earliest acts of international LGBTQ+ activism at an Olympic Games.
