Elon Musk's personal assistant of 12 years, Mary Beth Brown, once asked for a raise. She had been by his side through the founding of SpaceX, the early Tesla years, and every crisis in between. She was arguably the person who kept his life functional.

Elon told her to take two weeks off. He said he wanted to see if her role was something he actually needed or something he had just gotten used to. When she came back after two weeks, he told her he had managed without her and that they should part ways.

People who heard this story called it cold. Brutal. Even cruel. And maybe it was. But it also reveals something about how Elon operates that most people don't want to accept.

He runs every part of his life, including his relationships, through an efficiency filter. Not because he doesn't care. People close to him say he cared about Mary Beth genuinely. But because the part of his brain that builds rockets and designs cars is the same part that evaluates everything else. There is no switch between the engineer and the human. They're the same person.

That's what makes him capable of things nobody else can do. And it's what makes him capable of things most people wouldn't do.

Elon's salute is our first major social Rorschach of Trump's presidency.

He touches his heart, does a salute, turns, touches his heart, does a salute, and says "my heart goes out to you."

Liberals will only see this is a Nazi salute. This is proof Trump et al are Nazis, racists, fascists, etc.

Conservatives will immediately believe Elon's explanations, call it the Roman salute, say it was emblematic of his heart going out to the crowd, etc.

Neither is likely to be convinced.

Sociopolitical divides widen as liberals believe more than ever their conservative neighbor is a Nazi and conservatives believe more than ever their liberal neighbor is an idiot.

I beg you to consider not giving these Rorschach tests time and energy.

There are yields to be farmed.
