The Real Reason Mallam Nasir El-Rufai Is Still Behind Bars
Months in custody. No conviction. And still, no trial date that inspires confidence.
Strip away the legal language and a simple question remains: if the case against Mallam Nasir El-Rufai were as strong as claimed, why does it keep dragging on? Strong cases get tested in court, not left to gather dust in a cell. This looks less like a prosecution and more like a holding pattern, and holding patterns exist to serve those who benefit from the delay.
Consider what his freedom would mean. A free El-Rufai walks back into public life, and the comparisons begin on their own. People remember Kaduna under his leadership: bold reforms, infrastructure that moved, decisions made and delivered. Then they look at today. Roads in decline. Communities living under the shadow of insecurity. Families squeezed by prices that rise faster than hope. For any government struggling to show results, that contrast is not just uncomfortable. It is dangerous.
That is why silence is so valuable to them. Mallam is one of the few figures with the record, the credibility, and the sheer presence to expose the distance between what was delivered then and what is being delivered now. Remove him from the conversation, and the comparison goes quiet.
2027 is closing in, and everyone knows it. A free Mallam would not simply speak. He would organise, mobilise, and remind a restless public what a standard of performance actually looks like. For those who dread that, custody does the work for them: stretch the trial, tighten the conditions, and wait for memory to fade.
But memory is stubborn, and Nigerians are paying attention.
Kaduna is watching. The country is watching. They see a man who has not been found guilty, held in conditions that look more like containment than justice. Until a court rules otherwise, the presumption of innocence is not a favour to be granted or withheld. It is his right, and it is the foundation on which every citizen's freedom stands. If it can be set aside for one man, it can be set aside for any of us.
The longer this continues, the plainer the truth becomes. What they fear is not the law. It is the ballot box, and the record Mallam still carries.
The Movement is Rising.
Nigerians are not aware that a tax law has been passed, which requires everyone to pay 25% of their earnings as tax. The National Assembly has already passed this law, and it will swing into action after the election.

He said that as far as he is concerned the action goes against religious guidance. The scholar pointed to a teaching from the Prophet of God that anyone who picks a leader while knowing a better qualified person exists has betrayed himself, God and the wider community.
