NEWS | The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (#FSSAI) has issued a regulatory clarification tightening the use of the word “Tea”, stating that only beverages derived from the plant Camellia sinensis can legally be marketed as tea in India.
In an official notification issued on December 24, FSSAI observed that several Food Business Operators (FBOs) are marketing products such as Rooibos Tea, Herbal Tea and Flower Tea despite these beverages not being obtained from Camellia sinensis. The authority said such practices are misleading and amount to misbranding under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Referring to the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, the regulator clarified that tea — including Kangra Tea, Green Tea and Instant Tea in solid form — must be manufactured exclusively from the leaves, buds and tender stems of the Camellia sinensis plant. Any direct or indirect use of the word “Tea” for plant-based or herbal infusions not derived from this source violates existing food safety norms.
FSSAI further stated that products not made from Camellia sinensis do not qualify to be named as tea. Based on their composition, such products may fall under proprietary foods or be governed by the Food Safety and Standards (Approval for Non-Specified Food and Food Ingredients) Regulations, 2017.
The authority has directed all food businesses, including e-commerce platforms involved in manufacturing, packing, marketing or importing such products, to strictly comply with the regulations and refrain from using the term “Tea” for non-compliant beverages.
Food Safety Commissioners of all States and Union Territories and Regional Directors of FSSAI have been instructed to ensure strict monitoring and enforcement. The regulator warned that action will be initiated against violators under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and related rules.
The clarification, issued on December 24, is expected to have a significant impact on the herbal and wellness beverage market, prompting companies to rebrand products that have long been marketed using the “tea” label.

Tea needs on-pack health claims, which can help it capitalize on its known benefits, appeal to a health-conscious audience, and support the growth of the tea industry. For this to happen, clinical trials are needed. #Tea#healthbenefits#clinicaltrials@GuwahatiNiper@TRATocklai
My friend bought a stock at 1.25Rs. And, now it is 22Rs. And, he made crazy returns.
I asked him: how much did you invest?
"Oh, I invested very little. Wish I had invested more"
Here is the point that most people don't get about investing:
[1] If your net worth is 1Crore, you buy a stock worth 5000. And, it goes 20X, it doesn't make a dent on your net worth
[2] But, if your net worth is 1Crore, you buy a stock worth 5Lakhs. And, the stock goes 2X, it makes a 10% difference to your net worth.
People focus too much on 20X, 30X-- but focus very little on what % of your net worth, you are investing in assets you trust.
For doing that, you need knowledge.
Most people "gamble", not "invest" in the stock markets.

If you wish to buy, Gold, buy REAL GOLD (not SGB).
If you wish to buy, Real Estate, buy REAL Estate (not REITs).
[1] Let me explain the point by telling you the sad story of the 1000Rs note.
It was banned due to Demonetization.
Now, Zoom in and read what it said: "I promise to pay the bearer a sum of 1000Rs"
[2] Now, if you have 1000Rs note (which you accidentally found now) good luck making the government stick to its promise of paying you 1000Rs (say 2 notes of 500Rs)
[3] Now before you start bombarding me with things like:-
- Hey, it was legally demonetized
- You could have exchanged it (a time period was given to you)
- It solved the black money problem.
I have no interest in debating politics.
My point is simple: a promise was made. And, it was broken easily.
The sentence did not say: ""I promise to pay the bearer a sum of 1000Rs ....BUT... you might have to get in line to change that note one day"
The point I am making is this: REAL GOLD or REAL (REAL ESTATE) are CORE products, not derivative products (like REITS or SGBs)
REITs and SGBs have MORE "if" and"buts" compered to REAL CORE products.
If you want to buy government controlled products, simply buy NIFTY 50 (it will likely give you more returns than SGBs or REITs).
Don't confuse SGB with Real Gold.
Or REITs with REAL (REAL) Estate.
SGB is a BOND (like the 1000Rs note).
A lot of conditions could be introduced retrospectively, which you can't see right now.
These are plain facts, like it or leave it.
Assam is known for its splendid tea gardens, and Assam Tea has made its way all over the world.
I would like to laud the remarkable tea garden community, which is working hard and enhancing Assam’s prestige all over the world.
I also urge tourists to visit these tea gardens during their visits to the state.
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister #NarendraModi approved the proposal of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade for Uttar Poorva (Northeast) Transformative Industrialization Scheme, 2024 (UNNATI – 2024) for a period of 10 years from the date of notification along with 8 years for committed liabilities at a total cost of ₹10,037 crore.
The incentives would be available under the scheme to investors for setting up new units or undertaking a significant expansion of the existing units.
Centre has formulated the New Industrial Development Scheme, UNNATI (Uttar Poorva Transformative Industrialization Scheme), 2024 as a Central Sector Scheme for the development of Industries and generation of employment in the states of the Northeast Region. The scheme's main objective is to generate gainful employment, which will lead to the area's overall socio-economic development. It will create productive economic activity in the manufacturing and service sectors.
Industrial development in the NER needs to be given a fresh thrust with emphasis on job creation, skill development, and sustainable development by attracting new investments and nurturing existing ones, claims Centre.
However, to maintain a proper balance between industrial growth and the pristine environment of the NER, certain industries are kept on the positive list such as Renewable energy, EV charging stations etc and there is a Negative list for certain sectors which may hamper the environment such as cement, plastic etc.
A manager of a cement company talking to GPlus on condition of anonymity said, "The scheme is good but the cement industry can never be negative in the northeast."
Political pundits feel this is the last move by the BJP-led central government to woo voters of the northeast before the model code of conduct is implemented.
