yes this, i think the best writing advice is to stop trying to become a better writer and become a more alive person, as in go out into the world. pay deep attention. travel and get lost. fall in love, then get your heart broken again and again. talk to odd strangers and befriend people who alter your understanding of the world. give yourself something true to write from
i learned this somewhat backwards during a creative sabbatical when i experimented with being a full-time writer. i spent so much time thinking and trying to write that i accidentally removed myself from the very thing that generated my writing, that is, life itself
i had misunderstood my own creative process. i’m an experiencer and lover of life first. writing comes second, it’s how i metabolise what happens to me. making ‘writer’ my primary identity actually made me a worse writer. living provides all the material
I wish I could bottle up the feeling of having your friends over for dinner on the porch and everyone is laughing and they stay way late even though we all work tomorrow and there’s a little spilled wine on your feet and your face hurts from laughing. I hope I can do this forever
