@Mspuddicombe I agree, even in concerts today, while replicating a recorded version can be difficult, it seems the audience expects way more out of a live performer. The standard of performance is expected to match the recordings put out. #W23POPMUS
@perb197 I agree while recorded music is often perfect it lacks the authentic feel of live music. Acoustic style for example seems to be less popular and has been replaced by heavily edited recorded versions. Technology has definitely had an impact in the decline of live music. #W23POPMUS
Modern technology allows us to experience music in creative ways. Many consumers enjoy heavily edited music that uses auto tune and samplings. Today, a bar for example is often being entertained by a DJ. Live music while still classic, is becoming more old school. #W23POPMUS
@chboland1 I agree there definitely is a line that can not be crossed when sampling music. Artists need to be respectful to one another, give proper credit and be aware of any potential cultural appropriation and cultural theft. #W23POPMUS
@Juliewilliams0 I agree that credit must be given when due. Although I think sampling songs is a creative way to put a unique spin on already released hits. Many popular artists sample songs today and of course give proper credit. #W23POPMUS
Schlock means inferior to the original. This is a matter of opinion. Songs can be covered by other artists and putting alternate styles on then can create uniqueness. It doesn't always mean culture theft. With proper consent, songs can be sampled to expand music. #W23POPMUS
@mjoel830 I also recognized this song from Kanye West sampling it in "Gold Digger." I believe Kanye, and other artists, sample classics to bring a new refreshed feeling to them and help expand the emotions they brought to the public years ago. #W23POPMUS
@CassandraCareen I agree! I believe this sis why Ray Charles was such a classic artist. Putting emotion into a song and evoking feelings in others is a key component to why his music was so popular. #W23POPMUS
Ray Charles uses a breaking voice to signify his emotions of devotion. He puts his heart and soul into the performance which is often what popular songs today are missing. This is a main reason why even today, this song is such a classic, it is filled with passion. #W23POPMUS
@rmcritch_mun Similarly to your tweet, the first product I thought of when related to social status were the Apple AirPods. This goes to show how influential this product is and how it turns music into more than passive listening and creates labels of social status within it. #W23POPMUS
@AlexanderButl3r I agree. With streaming services and a wide catelog of music no one is forced to primarily listen to what is on the radio. It allows for diversification of music and plays a part in hidden gems that may become trendy. #W23POPMUS
AirPods are expensive and seen as luxurious. When seen on someone, people assume they are from a high social class. It is interesting how something that aims to make music more accessible can be associated with a status. I use earbuds daily to access music on the go. #W23POPMUS
Popular music is not always "dumbed-down" forms of music, but it does not always stand the tests of time. As new trends emerge what is popular at one moment can fade away. "False needs" are temporary fulfilment's or distractions which people get from popular culture. #W23POPMUS
@dionbennett99 Many popular songs today are more basic (dumb down) so the majority can listen to them without much thought as to what they actually mean. This, like you said, makes passive listening easier, people are more likely to stream it therefore it becomes popular. #W23SSPOPMUS
@chboland1 This is a great example of trends and how what is trending influences society. Years ago the idea of AirPods seemed ridiculous, and now it has started a revolution of wireless technology. Having AirPods is like a false need to be apart of a trend. #W23SSPOPMUS
@BrookeSlous I agree that societies feel the need to fit in which in turn influencing what is trending. Different trends arise from different interests. For example, what is currently trending may not always fit what you like, but could be liked by many others. #S22POPMUS
@marilyn_brandy Hi, I agree that popular music pushes the idea of perfectionism. What you see in the media or hear in music is often the highlights of someone's life. This in turn quickly passes with trends and creates the idea of music that is dumbed-down. #S22POPMUS
@shahwan_yamen I find when I stress eat I feel worse at the end of the day and not better! I agree that "food for mood" can reduce stress eating. This along with exercise can make anyone feel better about themselves. When you take care of your body you are more likely to feel good too #hkr1000
It is important to keep your mental health as a priority even when school may seem like the most important thing. Personally when I am less stressed and take more time for myself by exercising, taking breaks and talking with friends I see an improvement in my grades. #hkr1000
From reviewing my mood checks I seemed to be most stressed in the middle of the school week. My moods improved on the weekends when I was able to take time for myself. Stepping back and doing activities like exercising can lower stress and improve mental health. #hkr1000
