@JackpRyan34#W23POPMUS I like the way you looked at this Jack! I do also believe that new technology has affected how people consume live music as the experiences are actually quite different from a studio recording where it is perfected before hand.
@perb197 #W23POPMUS I agree. This level of polished & perfected studio recordings are not comparable & most times the artists cannot come close to replicating the recordings live. I feel live music is more commonly enjoyed for the ‘real life’ aspect opposed to the quality.
#W23POPMUS I feel that Wald’s assessment is true. With the technology available now such as autotune, it has allowed artists today to share their perfected music. While concerts are enjoyed, the standard of music performed doesn't compare to the records enhanced by technology.
@HollyButt31#W23POPMUS I feel the more I think about this topic my thoughts consistently change! As an African-American, I do still feel this music can hold some sort of value as a cover for example but in the end, I feel it comes down to crediting the original artist & not just stealing it.
@lilyjacobs21#W23POPMUS I agree with it being a form of cultural theft to make it appeal to white teen listeners however I think that it existing as a cover, it can still hold value that way but as you mentioned, credit should have been given where it’s due! I feel this is where racism enters
#W23POPMUS I feel the authors considered it schlock as it is quite different from the original and although it also may appear to be cultural theft, I feel that we can still value it for other reasons as it can exist as a cover & be enjoyable but it should credit the originals.
@ryleemusic2011#W23POPMUS I think you made some great points here! I also feel that a breaking voice signifies the ability to be vulnerable. I think this almost develops more of a personality for Ray Charles through his music that listeners can connect to.
@CassandraCareen As the others said, I completely agree; it is a great point! Breaking voice does catch attention and Ray Charles does a great job with this. I feel that breaking voice also develops connections for listeners as it almost in a way feels more relatable. #W23POPMUS
#W23POPMUS I think that Ray Charles uses a breaking voice to show emotion and depth throughout his music that generates a form of connection with those listening. Furthermore, I feel that this music really expresses his personality while providing catchy and enjoyable songs.
@Tyrell_Tapper#W23POPMUS For sure! I find myself having the ‘apple or Spotify' discussion quite frequently and it seems like everyone has one or the other. I find streaming services have influenced me as well due to the ‘for you’ section and when it comes to sharing music with others.
@Mijmercer#W23POPMUS I like the point you made about them showcasing a divide in social class and agree overheads amplified the listening experience. I feel that there is a big difference between purchasing them for the ‘status’ versus for quality and the experience as you have mentioned.
#W23POPMUS The AirPods Max shows high social class but this has not changed the way I listen to music. I own AirPods 2nd gen($600 cheaper) and don’t believe the 'status' of owning the Max is worth the price. However, purchasing for the quality of the product is a different story.
@cawadman Hey Catherine, I totally agree with popular music creating the false need of people partying, doing drugs, etc. It is so common today to see artists promote living these ‘wild’ lifestyles in order to gain this ‘desired’ social status especially in this area of music. #W23POPMUS
@mjoel830 This was a very different idea from what came to mind for me but I couldn’t agree more! I too feel it is not that large of a difference from other headphones on the market that are much cheaper. It’s ultimately the brand name associated and ‘status’ that comes with it!
#W23POPMUS
An example of a false need created by the popular music or media industries that comes to mind are the social status/idea of living a certain lifestyle often unrealistic for most. Due to this, I do believe that popular music propagates a dumbed-down form of music. #W23POPMUS
