The three men in the photo are @MPyusufhassan, MP for Kamukunji; @FarahMaalimM, MP for Dadaab; and @BillowKerrow, a former senator from Mandera.
Yusuf Hassan is married to an Israeli woman, Susanna Price, who works for UNICEF. Some people say he tells others that his visit to Las Anod is motivated by hatred toward Israel.
Billow Kerow has lost the Mandera seat in the last two elections, showing that many people in Mandera no longer support him.
At the same time, northeastern Kenya is suffering from a serious drought. Many animals have died, and people’s lives are at risk. Some of these leaders represent those very communities.
Farah Maalim represents Dadaab, a very large area with no paved roads, no clean water, no electricity, no proper hospitals, and no good schools or universities. Insecurity is common, and both civilians and soldiers are killed regularly.
If these leaders have not improved their own areas after more than 60 years of independence, it is hard to see what they can offer the people of Las Anod.
A person should take care of their own home first before trying to fix someone else’s.

Israel’s recognition of Somaliland constitutes a significant step in its engagement with the Horn of Africa and the broader Red Sea security environment. While the move does not immediately alter the regional balance of power, it formalizes ties with a relatively stable political entity in one of the world’s most strategically sensitive maritime corridors. https://t.co/C6Pz0bSCAT
Dear Father, Uncles, and Grandparents ,
Tonight, my heart feels a deep need to write this letter to you. I know you are not physically with us anymore, but I also know that you are present in spirit, in memory, and in feeling. My heart wants to update you on where Somaliland stands today, the land you struggled for, the country you sacrificed your lives for, and the future you dreamed of for your children and grandchildren (for us).
I know you have been waiting for information from us. I know you trusted us, believed in us, and expected good things from us. Tonight, I bring you updates that I am certain you would have loved to hear. It is the information you waited for. It is the news you hoped would one day come from us.
Father, Uncles, and Grandparent; we have succeeded. We have succeeded, because tonight the Republic of Somaliland is one of UN member. We have succeeded because the world has finally acknowledged the work, the struggle, the vision, the dream, the goal, and the mission that you carried more than 35 years ago.
We have succeeded because we remember what you fought for, we honor it, and we protect it with everything we have. We believe in it deeply; not just politically, but in our hearts and in our principles. We have succeeded because you did not leave behind a weak generation. You left behind a generation that continued your struggle and carried it forward.
Truly and fully, we succeeded, because your children became a generation armed with your courage, your boldness, your resilience, your refusal to surrender, your patience, your unity, your brotherhood, and your dignity. These values did not disappear with you; they live on in us.
Tonight, absolutely you can rest peacefully in your graves. Sleep with calm hearts under the mercy of Allah, because your mission has been fulfilled and your sacrifices have borne fruit. Rest in mercy and paradise, because the people you fought for, the people you wanted to live with dignity and hope, have finally reached what you wished for them.
Father, Uncles, and Grandparents, tonight we are living the life you wanted for us. We have what you dreamed of for us. We have freedom. We have hope. We breathe with our heads held high. We speak freely. We dream boldly, knowing that we belong to a republic and a homeland of our own —the Republic of Somaliland.
This message comes from your son.
Your struggle was not in vain.
Your sacrifices were not forgotten.
Your dream is now our reality.
— Your son

#OPINION: More Propaganda Than Analysis: How Turkish Media Misread Somaliland’s Recognition
The Africa Plus | Opinion
By @awguure
A recent Turkish media report used a strong headline and a shocking image to describe Israel’s recognition of the Republic of Somaliland as a plan to “destabilize” the Horn of Africa. This kind of reporting is not only unfair, it is deeply misleading.
First, Somaliland is not a new or artificial project. It has existed as a functioning, self-governing republic for more than 30 years. It built peace from the ground up, held elections, created institutions, and maintained stability in one of the most difficult regions in the world. Long before this recognition, Somaliland was already stable.
So the claim that recognition suddenly brings “destabilization” does not make sense.
Second, the language and the image used are meant to provoke anger, not understanding. Instead of explaining Somaliland’s history or its long struggle for recognition, the report tries to connect Somaliland to wider global conflicts. This removes Somaliland’s own voice and treats it as a tool, not as a people with rights and a clear political reality.
Many Somalilanders see this reaction as driven by hatred and bias, not facts. The anger is not really about peace or regional order. It is about refusing to accept Somaliland’s existence and, at the same time, attacking Jewish people and Israel through aggressive narratives. This is why the response feels like antisemitism mixed with hostility toward Somalilanders.
Turkish media, let us be clear, no headline, no photo, and no media campaign will change the fact that Israel has recognized the Republic of Somaliland. That decision is already made.
More importantly, Somaliland’s legitimacy does not come from one country or one headline. It comes from its people, its history, and its stability.
What the region needs is honest journalism, calm discussion, and respect for facts, not fear, propaganda, or emotional manipulation.
Somalilanders understand this clearly. We know our reality. And we are not deceived.

@trtworld, the Turkish state media outlet, has made a habit of spreading misleading and false narratives about the Recognition of Rep. of Somaliland. Because of this, I decided to send my opinion to several independent media outlets, including @Jerusalem_Post, @TheAfricaPlus, @TimesofIsrael, and @addisstandard
I am pleased to say that @TheAfricaPlus (The Africa Plus+) has already published it.
This is how we respond by exposing Turkish media propaganda, especially from @trtworld, and by challenging lies with facts and clear voices.

Dear Turkish media @trtafrika, I am telling you that #Turkey and #Somalia are showing #antisemitism, and as we Somaliland we understand that clearly.
Nothing you say will change Israel’s recognition of the Republic of Somaliland. That decision is already made.
What you are really doing is using this issue to hide your hatred toward Somalilanders and Jewish people. We see the truth, and we are not deceived.
Tammy Bruce, Deputy Representative of the US to the UN @USUN, exposes in a discussion on Somaliland the double standards and hypocrisy of the international community and the UN Security Council.
Other countries are allowed to recognize a state that does not exist. Israel is forbidden from recognizing even a real state.
Spoiler alert: no one will determine for Israel whom it may conduct diplomatic relations with.
As the UN Security Council meets on 29 December 2025, we share a brief historic reminder: Somaliland has stood for more than 34 years with peace, stability, and a clear national identity.
Today, we also say thank you to #Israel for officially recognizing the Republic of Somaliland. Your decision is an act of courage and respect for our long journey toward international recognition.
Somaliland’s voice will not fade. Our story is real, strong, and unforgettable.
A historic moment for the Horn of Africa. The Republic of Somaliland has officially received its first international recognition as a sovereign state.
This recognition reflects decades of peace-building, democratic governance, and resilience.
Congratulations to our fellow Somalilanders.

When @HassanSMohamud says, “Israel has attacked us,” he is not talking like a leader who represents #Somalia or its people. He sounds more like someone speaking on behalf of #Egypt, #China and #Turkey, not Somalia.
The president of Somalia serves Egypt and Turkey more than he serves Somalia.
In reality, #Israel and @netanyahu have outplayed Egypt and its allies politically, including in the Horn of Africa. That young man ended up embarrassing the Arabs, Egypt, and Turkey.
From Ethiopia 🇪🇹🫡
Congratulations to our #Somaliland brothers and sisters. I wish I were in #Hargeisa, sharing your happiness and celebrating your achievement.
