I just paid $.25 to read this @TorontoStar article thanks to @axate! The future of “casual reading” versus subscription has arrived! Promise for journalism!!! https://t.co/4fXLUElPbO
Have a listen to @EstherKeziaT on The Publisher Podcast to hear more about how Axate's casual payments are helping @TorontoStar convert lapsed subscribers, appeal to younger readers and grow their potential paying audience:

Die kanadische Zeitung @TorontoStar will #Micropayment einführen. Die ersten Test mit der Technologie von @axate seien vielversprechend verlaufen. Es ist das erste große Medienhaus in Nordamerika, das den Sprung in ein #PayperArticle-Modell wagt. https://t.co/MG0ARvmjha
@jestyn@rorysutherland It's still mad that we don't have the digital equivalent of news stand one-off sale. Even madder because it exists (I built @axate) but prevailing orthodoxy in media says it's better to sell 6 months access for 25¢ than a day's access for the same price.
@rorysutherland Demanding that people pay all the time for something they only want some of the time is a terrible idea. Subscription without alternative options limits the market to a fraction of the people who might otherwise buy...
@heidilegg@stphnmaher@axate@TorontoStar@macleans When every single person in the population is a potential customer, the news media can return to being a mass market, profitable and growing, sector accountable only to its customers - the actual readers.
That is why I love the @axate solution @TorontoStar is experimenting with. Government funding like @macleans relies on is problematic when the party in power uses the newsroom as an organ. Monthly subscriptions that are too expensive for the average consumer are not informing enough people. Nonprofits that are funded by partisan rich people or foreign adversaries are also not working to bridge and inform Canadians. A consumer model that is affordable is truly the most independent media.
I used @TorontoStar's micropaywall via @axate for the first time yesterday. Bought 2 articles for a total cost of $1.50 and ended up getting full access to the site for 24 hours. Really great UX and I am very happy to continue supporting quality journalism this way!
@drpatrick Check out pay-per-read with @axate. I don’t have any interest in them but believe ways for everyone to buy an article is the future. @TorontoStar offering it now. The cost of being informed must be lower.
Readers of @TorontoStar can now choose whether to subscribe or pay per article with Axate's casual payments system.

I am a fan of Katie's career and last week I wanted to read this Shakespearean moment in Canada. Thank you, TorStar and Axate! You are changing the game. The cost of being informed now opens to the world. @semaforben@peterlattman@NiemanLab@emilybell@nancygibbs @johnsnonsense @Linda_Pizzuti@jpalfrey https://t.co/CurI8K6o8M via @torontostar

Research from @Digiday confirms that subscriptions have reached a plateau for news publishers. They found that:
📉 <10% of publishers generate a large or very large portion of their revenue from subscriptions in Q1 2024, down from nearly 25% in Q1 2022.
This research could seem indicative of a hopeless situation for the news media, but it's actually a huge opportunity: there's a whole 90+% of readers to tap into and turn into customers. Discounts, churn and lowering ARPU doesn’t have to be the storyline for the news media...
