Powerful words from Historian @DalrympleWill on Gaza and on why Britain is implicated in the situation there. This was introducing our fundraising event for @MedicalAidPal (see link to donate in comments) in London on May 30th, 2025. @saadmohseni@khalidabdalla
"BBC LAUGHED AT BABIES BEING BLOWN UP"
Kafka meets Orwell at the national union of journalists
I've been told that, incredibly, some NUJ delegates at their conference in Blackpool apparently laughed at the thought of babies being blown up in Gaza. I've heard that when one of them was challenged, he allegedly said, "The more, the better."
I understand that these delegates included senior BBC presenters.
I'm told that these particular delegates had spent the entire conference voting against every resolution that supported Palestine.
Whenever they lost a vote, they would bring it back with a point of order or vote clause by clause to neuter it. The NUJ is a small union of under 20,000 and is haemorrhaging members. I'm informed that it is well known in union circles that those in the BBC sections have threatened to leave en block if the union supports Palestine in any way.
Manchester delegate, Stefan Choluwka, said:
" it was like something out of Kafka's, the trial."
When the NUJ executive ruled out of order yet another attempt to block discussion on Gaza, Harvey Cook approached them, whispered something to them, and magically, they changed their minds.
I understand that many pro Palestinian delegates were not allowed to speak by time being called on debate. When one delegate from Manchester spoke to tell the conference what the pro Israel lobby had said, he was ruled out of order.
This delegate was then intimidated by a member of the BBC world service and later by an NUJ executive member.
Worse was to follow. The delegate was then threatened with disciplinary action. Charges were then brought against the delegate by the executive) rather than any named accusers.
One of the charges is that the delegate may in the future write an article about the conference. Think about that for a moment, a journalist is charged with, at some time in the future, writing an article about journalists at a conference for - journalists!
Yet when opening the conference, union president, Natasha Hirst, said: "Healthy debate is crucial to strengthening the union's work." I agree, and that should extend to debate about the genocide in Palestine.
Over the past 20 months, the Government of Israel has continuously made unsubstantiated claims against @UNRWA and its neutrality.
These claims have put the lives of UNRWA staff at serious risk and harmed the reputation of the Agency.
Here are extracts from a letter I recently sent to the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs 👇
More than 1 million children live in Gaza.
Instead of being in school or playing, they’ve endured unimaginable suffering.
Together with @UNICEFpalestine and @UNRWA, we are providing mental health support, recreational activities, and a sense of normalcy.
This morning, Israeli officials from the Jerusalem Municipality, accompanied by Israeli Security Forces, forcibly entered six @UNRWA schools in East Jerusalem. They gave closure orders for the schools effective in 30 days.
UNRWA schools in occupied East Jerusalem are installations providing #education to Palestine Refugee children.
Some 800 boys & girls are directly impacted by these closure orders and are likely to miss finishing their school year.
UNRWA schools are protected by the privileges & immunities of the United Nations.
Today’s unauthorised entries & issuance of closure orders are a violation of these protections + represent a revocation of Israel’s obligations under international law.
These illegal closure orders come in the wake of Israeli Knesset legislation seeking to curtail UNRWA operations.
UNRWA is committed to stay & deliver education and other basic services to Palestine Refugees in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in accordance with the General Assembly resolution mandated to the Agency.
#Gaza: devastating to confirm the deaths of two additional @UNRWA colleagues and 8 Palestinian Red Crescent aid workers & first responders.
This brings the death toll of aid workers killed to 408 among them more than 280 UNRWA staff since the war began 1.5 years ago.
The body of our colleague killed in #Rafah was retrieved yesterday, together with the aid workers from @PalestineRCS - all of them discarded in shallow graves - a profound violation of human dignity.
These were humanitarian workers.
Whether on the front line, or in their homes with their families, civilians must be protected at all time.
Targeting or endangering emergency responders, journalists or humanitarian workers is a flagrant & severe disregard of international law.
In Gaza, these killings have become routine.
This cannot become the new norm.
There must be accountability.
International humanitarian law applies to all, without exception.
@ifrc
I want to express my best wishes for #EidAlFitr to all Muslims around the world.
But I do so with a heavy heart, thinking about the many Muslims who won't be able to celebrate Eid with their families due to war, conflict or displacement.
Eid is a moment to value solidarity and compassion – and I hope this moment will bring people together to make these values a reality.
Another black day for the UN in #Gaza.
Condolences to our colleagues at @UNOPS for their tragic loss & wishes for a smooth recovery to our injured colleagues.
The #UN including @UNRWA continue to pay a heavy price while undertaking humanitarian duties.
Humanitarian workers must be protected at all times.
UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres strongly condemns the breach of @UN premises in East Jerusalem.
Israeli forces forcibly entered the UNRWA Kalandia Training Centre and attempted to close UNRWA schools, affecting 600+ students and staff.
#Education must be protected.
International law must be upheld.
"For 45 days I was blindfolded and on my knees."
A Palestinian man from Gaza who was detained by Israeli forces explains his ordeal of being tortured under Israeli captivity.
Ibrahim Mohammad Khaleel al-Shaweesh, who was released in a very poor state of health, says Israeli forces used all forms of torture, including electricity and dogs.
He says that at one stage he was blindfolded, shackled and on his knees for 45 days.
.@UNLazzarini warns about the impact of banning @UNRWA, the backbone of the humanitarian operation in #Gaza, "at a time we are collectively committed to increase aid."
"This might undermine and sabotage the implementation of the #ceasefire."

.@UNRWA has more schools, medical facilities, warehouses & staff than all other humanitarian agencies in the Occupied Palestinian Territory combined.
No other entity has the capacity or reach to deliver lifesaving aid at the scale needed.
UNRWA an irreplaceable lifeline for millions of Palestinians.
🛑 The spread of #disinformation against @UNRWA is meant to create chaos & divert attention from the political aims to dismantle the Agency.
It is distraction from what really matters: The devastating impact the war in #Gaza & the region is having on civilians & the work that our @UNRWA teams continue to do to save lives.
The spread of false information continues unabated causing harm to Palestine Refugess by undermining the only UN agency dedicated to providing humanitarian assistance, education + primary health care to one of the most vulnerable communities in the region.
UNRWA is the international community’s instrument put in place to address the plight of Palestine refugees in the absence of an alternative & until a just political solution is found.
Most importantly, this dis-information campaign is putting the lives of my colleagues in the occupied Palestinian territory including #Gaza at further risk.
Before you share, double check the source & question the intent. Ask, why is this information out there?
Avoid becoming an echo for disinformation & de facto of fueling hate.
It’s more harmful than you think.
