|| Are you aware that Chhath Puja is one of the oldest festivals mentioned in our scriptures? ||
Chhath Puja, an ancient festival documented in our Puranas and Mahabharata, holds significance as it symbolizes the number 6. The festival is observed on the 6th day of the Kartik month or Kartik Shukla Shashti.
While the festival spans four days, the focal Chhat celebration occurs on the 6th day, also known as Surya Shashti. The number 6 holds special importance in Chhath. Devotees worship the Sun and Chhathi Maiya, two different ditties, during the Chhath Puja festivities.
The exact origins of this festival remain ambiguous, but it is believed to be connected to the Surya Upasana performed by Yuddhishthir, as mentioned in Section 3 of the Aranyaka Parva of the Mahabharata.
Chhath Puja is sometimes linked to Goddess Usha, but misconceptions exist regarding her role. While some consider her to be the wife of Surya Dev, others identify her as the mother or sister of Surya. It's essential to clarify that Usha and Chhathi Maa are different deities.
Let's delve into the relationship of Surya Dev's actual wife. Randal Devi, the sole and authentic wife of Surya, is the daughter of Vishwakarma. She transformed herself into Chhaya and created a clone, named Sangya.
On the other hand, Usha is a Vedic goddess described in the Rig Veda. Rigvedic hymn 1.48 portrays her as riding in a hundred chariots, unveiled by the daily arrival of light. She is depicted as the force that sets all motion into life and inspires all life into motion, urging people to fulfill their duties. This association between the sun and Usha has led to the belief in a connection between them.
But NOTHING IS MENTIONED ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP OF SURYA AND USHA IN VEDA.
Now, who is chhathi maiya, then?
According to the Shvetashvatara Upanishad, the Supreme Being (Parmatma) divided into two parts to facilitate the creation of the entire universe. The human form (Purus) was on the right, while nature (prakriti) was on the left.
In the Prakriti Khand of the Brahmavaivart Purana, it is mentioned that a significant aspect of the goddess of nature, Prakriti Devi, is referred to as Devasena. As the sixth part of nature, this goddess is widely known by the name Shashthi i.e Chhathi Maiya. According to the Puranas, it is believed that all these goddesses collectively safeguard humanity, ensuring their protection and longevity.
In an alternate tale, there existed a monarch named Priyavrata and his consort, Malini, who were childless and deeply distressed by this circumstance. Seeking to remedy this, King Priyavrata conducted a sonishti yajna with Maharishi Kashyap. The yajna proved successful, leading to the queen's pregnancy. However, their joy was short-lived as the newborn son did not survive. Filled with sorrow, the royal couple abandoned hopes of parenthood. Overwhelmed by despair, King Priyavrat contemplated suicide.
In the moment of crisis, the benevolent Shashthi Devi (Devasena, Chhathi Maiya) appeared and conveyed to the king that sincere worship would bring forth the blessing of a child. King Priyavrat heeded the advice and earnestly worshiped Goddess Shashthi on the Shashti Tithi of Kartik Shukla. Pleased with his devotion, the goddess granted her blessings. Since that propitious day, the Chhath festival has been commemorated annually on this date.
There exists no direct connection between Chhathi Maa and Surya Dev. However, the question arises: why do we worship the sun during Chhath?
As per our scriptures, specific dates have been designated for the worship of each deity, such as Ganesha on Chaturthi and Vishnu on Ekadashi. Similarly, the sun is revered on Saptami. Similarly, the sun is venerated on Saptami, as indicated by terms like Surya Saptami and Rath Saptami.
However, the uniqueness of Chhath lies in the worship of the Sun on Shashthi. In the Suryashthi fast, both Brahma and Shakti are honored together. Those observing the Chhath fast receive blessings from both deities, making it particularly special in this form of worship.
Additionally, according to a tale from the Mahabharata, Karna, a devout follower of Surya Dev, offered 'arj' (Chhath ritual offerings) to Surya Dev daily during his bath. Legend has it that every year on the Saptami Tithi of Kartik Shukla, Karna performed a special kind of puja. The people of Ang, present-day Bhagalpur in Bihar, embraced and followed this tradition. It is widely recognized that Biharis played a pivotal role in popularizing and making this tradition and festival well-known, thus providing a meaningful context to its significance.
It is also noteworthy that in ancient times, sun was regarded as a significant deity worldwide, be it Maya Civilization, Egyptian Civilization, Mesopotamian Civilization, Harappan Civilization or Japanize. All these civilization got vanished but, Biharis are still carrying it with same values.
