An Afghan asylum seeker entered the Church of Einsiedeln armed with a stick while worshippers were praying.

He tore the robe from the statue of the Virgin Mary, removed its crown, and placed it on his own head.

The immigrant was apprehended at the scene and taken into police custody. He was subsequently convicted of violating freedom of worship and religion.

Imagine that you are a 27 year old woman.

You go out for drinks with friends in the beautiful old town of Dusseldorf, Germany but become separated from them by 2.45am.

In a normal world, you would get into a taxi and go home. A friendly passerby might even call a taxi for you. That is called western civilisation.

Sadly, this is no longer the world we live in. Saad A (33), Ahmed A (40) and one other (unnamed) came to Germany from Syria. It is believed they arrived in the last 10 years.

Last June, a 27 year old woman was grabbed by these three men. They pushed her onto the bonnet of a parked car and took turns raping her.

Not even when someone wandered past, did they not stop, despite her pleas for help.

Ahmed told the passerby that he knew the woman and “She needs it”.

Eventually, two decent men walked past and intervened, despite the Syrians threatening to assault them too. The men would not give up, the Syrians fled but the police found two of them and DNA linked them to the victim.

When the trial started, Saad A objected to having a female interpreter.

This week the two Syrians were found guilty of rape and convicted. They were each given 5 years in prison by the female judge. The third man was never found or arrested.

Under Germany law, they will be eligible for early release after 2/3 of their sentence has been served. They could well be out in 2029. Possibly before that.

Following the publication of our rape gang inquiry report, I plan to use every parliamentary tool available to push for the establishment of a specialised taskforce for the identification, location, safeguarding, and urgent repatriation of British women and girls who have been trafficked overseas by the rape gangs.

In so many of our investigations, we have found evidence of the gangs attempting to take the women overseas - mainly unsuccessfully, but not always.

There are British women who are currently trapped as sex slaves in Pakistan and elsewhere across the region.

We do not know how many, nor does the Government.

Hundreds, definitely. Thousands? Very likely.

It is impossible to describe how they must be living.

We have seen how the rapists treated women here in Britain, when there is at least some fear the authorities may act. In Pakistan? It makes me feel sick thinking about it.

Our report calls for enhanced consular support, intelligence-sharing on missing persons cases recorded in known grooming hotspots, targeted reviews of passports and travel records linked to known perpetrators, and diplomatic pressure on destination countries for victim extraction and evidence gathering.

I tabled a motion in Parliament attracting the support of 16 MPs. But we need far more.

The lack of attention on this is terrifying.

We have the evidence, it is happening.

We are calling on the Government to act.
