I really like this new article on psychological safety (a belief that we can speak up, take risks & make mistakes without fear of being judged, humiliated or punished) at work. It sets out a series of activities/approaches that all of us can use to build psychological safety in our teams. These include:
- Manual of Me
- Team Charter
- Lifelife
- Activity from Google that ranks sources of anxiety
- 5-word Fridays
- Team temperature check

A sense of belonging. It reinforces us when things go wrong. It helps us thrive at work. It encourages us to take risk.
Now, imagine this feeling is gone.
Because…
- Your contributions during project discussions are dismissed (or attributed to someone else).
- You are asked to do simpler tasks because the advisor thinks you better do less challenging projects (resulting in smaller and less impactful contribution).
- Your colleagues joke about your appearance, religion or background, often starting it with saying “don’t take it personally, but…”
- Your colleagues discuss their work plans at informal networking events (local bar, restaurant, etc) and "forget" to invite you.
- You concerns are dismissed (e.g. due to "being emotional").
And even if you achieve a lot, your accomplishments will not receive the recognition they deserve (“It’s because of your advisor” or “You were just fortunate to have had stellar colleagues”).
Does it feel inclusive? Does it sound familiar?
For many women in academia, this is the reality.
As #PhD students and postdocs, they may dream about being faculties, flourishing with ideas and creativity, mentoring young students and making discoveries…
But way too often, the academic environment clip their wings.
“You dared too much. The dreams are just dreams. Keep them to yourself.”
A sense of belonging is what makes us a community. And inclusivity is central to it.
By being inclusive, you’re making the community stronger.

It's weird to me that people talk about "choosing to leave academia."
Many #phds leave b/c they've been insulted, undervalued, underpaid, exploited, and have 0 real options left.
Hell of a choice.

I am happy to conclude my trilogy on Cas9 specificity with our new preprint from the @MartinJinek lab! We solved a staggering number (15!) of crystal structures of Cas9 bound to bona fide off-targets to investigate the nature of mismatch tolerance.
