Bringing Tripoli into this argument without recognizing its painful and traumatic experiences under the Syrian regimes of Hafez and Bashar al-Assad greatly oversimplifies (حسن نية) both what the city has been through and why Lebanon is vulnerable in the first place.

Lebanon’s next “Hezbollah problem,” meaning a community seeking to hijack the state’s sovereignty and align it with a foreign power, will, in due time, likely emerge from Tripoli and its hinterland.

And, of course, this “Hezbollah problem” did not even begin with Hezbollah. Its roots go back to the 1960s, when the PLO, drawing on Palestinian refugees as well as many Lebanese supporters (mainly Muslims and Druze), sought to impose its will on a perennially weak Lebanese state.

This is why we urgently need to resolve the immediate Hezbollah challenge and try to build a political system capable of preventing future iterations of this recurring dynamic. Otherwise, once the new Syrian regime builds up its strength, it will inevitably seek to project its influence onto Lebanon, its weakest and most vulnerable neighbor, and the most accessible way to do so will be by weaponizing the Sunnis of the north in much the same way Iran has weaponized Lebanon’s Shia community.

If this were to happen, it would in turn drive the Christians and Druze to look toward Israel, ushering in either the de facto collapse of the state and a return to civil war or a renewed period of paralyzing polarization akin to the March 14 vs. March 8 tug-of-war between 2005 and 2011.

I likewise hope that King Abdullah is doing what he can to prepare and protect his country too from the inevitable...

للتذكير فقط: لأكثر من عشر سنوات، كان على مجلس الأمن أن يصوّت كل عام ليسمح بدخول المساعدات عبر دول ثالثة، لأن نظام الأسد في دمشق رفض مرور أي مساعدة إلا تحت سلطته وسيطرته.

اليوم، خلال أسبوعين فقط، دخل إلى السويداء 437 شاحنة و625 طن طحين — أي ما يعادل 58٪ من كل المساعدات التي حصلت عليها شمال غرب سوريا في عام كامل، لأربعة ملايين إنسان وعدد سكان السويداء أقل من مليون نسمة.

أي مقارنة بين نظام الأسد والسلطات الحالية في دمشق غير جادة ولا منطقية.
