BJP succeeded to conquer West Bengal by pushing SIR hard. Mamata Bannerji failed to turn “votes are being stolen” issue into a powerful mass movement. After so many years in power, she simply looked like another politician protecting her politics. What actually made the issue blow up was young people and civil society. They came across as non-partisan and genuinely fighting for the right to vote, so people listened. Wish our politicians seriously consider this side of the story.

To my generation,

There comes a moment in the life of every generation when it must choose between comfort and conscience. For us, that moment has come again.

In July, we stepped out onto the streets and a union minister resigned. We have done this before.

In 1942, the British arrested the leaders before dawn, believing a movement dies when its leaders are taken. It did not. The young carried it forward and ended the Raj.

Today, Modi-Shah's playbook is the same: close the roads, call it illegal, detain people before they speak.

So our answer will be the same as the young of 1942. If any of us is stopped tomorrow, the one standing beside us carries it on. If that one is stopped, the next does. This movement belongs to every one of us.

Years from now, someone will ask what we did on the 10th of October, when the trains stopped, the roads were sealed and a nation was told to stay silent.

Let our answer be one we are proud to give.

Anwar Shaikh, 1945–2026. Born in Karachi. Died yesterday. Another Pakistani we did not celebrate.
• He spent half a century at the New School doing what almost no one in Pakistani economics does: building a theory of capitalism from real competition, profit rates, and the accounts, not from donor templates. Capitalism: Competition, Conflict, Crises (2016) is the book. Most of the profession here never opened it.
• Abroad he was treated as one of the serious classical and Marxian economists of his generation. At home he was a name you might have heard if you stepped outside the seminar circuit. That is on us.
• I apologize, Anwar, for not inviting you to give the keynote at PSDE when it was still semi-independent. The room was available. The invitation was not. We filled it with safer names.
• I apologize for not making you visible in Pakistan while you were alive. Visibility was rationed. It went to people who could be introduced to a mission, a project, or a minister.
• Sadly, all of us are guilty. The ones who knew the work and stayed quiet. The ones who never looked. The ones who decided heterodox meant unfundable.
• Only the economists who are part of the donor network get the panels, the citations in policy notes, and the obituaries written in advance. Independent work on competition, crisis, and distribution does not clear that filter. Yours did not.
