Israel’s Culture Minister Miki Zohar said Sunday he will work to revoke the citizenship of Oscar-winning filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor after their documentary “NAZA” won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival.

The film examines what it describes as Israel’s “calculated mass killing” of Palestinian civilians in Gaza and features testimony from IDF intelligence officers and soldiers.

Zohar called the film “vile” and said it “constitutes treason.”

The @LemkinInstitute strongly condemns the recent inhumane statements of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, in which he called for the deliberate killing of “30 to 40” Palestinians every night in Gaza, even if they pose no immediate danger, because, according to him, “[t]here are people there who are not worthy of life. They shouldn’t live. They’re not even people.” We will be very clear: This statement, which has garnered some outrage in Europe, is an unambiguous declaration of genocidal intent and incitement to genocide.

Although Ben-Gvir’s provocative language ruffles some feathers in Israel, largely because he so plainly and crudely states to the world what is driving that nation in its war against the Palestinian people, he is nothing but the ugly, self-congratulatory face of a genocidal state and society.

Minister Ben-Gvir must be held legally responsible for his violations of the Genocide Convention. But that is not enough. As humanity has been saying for years now, mere condemnations of Israel and its leaders will not work. Symbolic sanctions will not work. Denouncing the inhumane is not enough when one has allowed the inhumane to become the reality for an entire group of people.

The international community has failed miserably to prevent this genocide or even stem its determined advance. But we can still stop the killing and mitigate the horrors. We can still save mothers and fathers, daughters and sons, brothers and sisters. As Dag Hammarskjöld, second Secretary-General of the United Nations reminded us: “The United Nations was not created in order to bring us to heaven, but in order to save us from hell.” This hell needs to come to an end.

Raj’in (“We Shall Return”) brings this documentation work into a new medium.

Co-created by Faiz Abu Rmeleh and Keren Manor and co-produced by B’Tselem and NowHere Media, the film, which is currently being screened as part of the Venice International Film Festival, was shot with 360° cameras and also incorporates footage filmed by Palestinian residents and protective presence activists. Through virtual reality, it places viewers inside the spaces where Palestinian shepherding communities in the West Bank face Israeli violence, demolitions and displacement from their land.

Since October 2023, 65 Palestinian communities have been entirely forcibly displaced, while another 18 have been partially displaced. More than 4,861 people have been driven from their homes and land, including at least 2,315 children.
