Sadly, this is a deeply rooted practice in education which many have as part of their daily schedule. In fact, some of the most visceral reactions I have gotten here on Twitter were last year when I tweeted that SSR was not the best use of the novice reader's time and that the fluency benefits could only be observed in students who were already proficient.
