23 minutes and 23 seconds of Reteaching the “Stick Concept” by Me ( CoachTF) after 28 years running it…Good/Bad/Ugly… Major coaching points that work for me and my teams
Texas Tech OC Mack Leftwich - Condensed Formation RPOs
Arc Tag
- Point Man = Block MDM
- Inside WR = Work behind point man & clean up MDM to CB.
- Arc Runner = Punch off inside foot and work for width.
QB Read = Aggressive throw unless the corner is low & outside the arc runner.
Really like this concept out of Counter Rt because it puts immense tension on those LBs.
By first establishing the run game, their passing game opens up as a byproduct, and they can now put those LBs in much tougher positions.
There’s a lot of different ways to organize pod work.
Here’s ONE way we organize Power pods in our practice structure.
Goal:
-isolate techniques
-maximize reps
-clean up communication
-connect Indy to team run
SKIP PULL TECHNIQUE
The skip pull is one of the most effective pulling techniques used in modern gap scheme football because it allows offensive linemen to stay square to the line of scrimmage while moving laterally and climbing to the second level. Instead of turning their back on the defense, the blocker “skips” by stacking the outside foot behind the inside foot, helping maintain vision, balance, leverage, and body control throughout the pull
The technique is commonly used in Power, Counter, GT Counter, Pin & Pull, and other gap scheme concepts where linemen must navigate traffic and block linebackers or safeties in space
✅ Keeps shoulders square to see the entire defense
✅ Improves balance and leverage in space
✅ Allows quicker adjustment to moving defenders
✅ Helps linemen avoid congestion and stay clean
✅ Effective for climbing to second level defenders
✅ Creates better body positioning on linebackers
Key coaching points:
• Sell the run with the first step
• Gain depth and create separation
• Stay square while circling back to the play side
• Accelerate vertically once the path clears
• Finish with leverage and active feet through contact
While extremely effective, the skip pull requires disciplined footwork, timing, and body control. Poor technique can cause linemen to drift vertically, lose leverage, or arrive late to the point of attack
Can organize this 100 different ways.
Here’s one way we organize our Counter Pod work in Indy.
Trying to connect:
- fronts
- combo blocks
- pulls
- and LB fits
Less random reps. More connected teaching.
🏈 A simple hack for building a powerful youth/feeder pipeline…
Create custom birthday cards with your helmet/logo and make them look official from your football program.
Then:
📅 Add every youth player’s birthday to your Google Calendar
✍️ Write a short personal card each month
🏫 Drop it off at their school/classroom
That’s it.
A parent stopped me today and said:
“My son was so excited to get that card… he still has it hanging on his wall.”
Coaches -
Never underestimate the power of making a young player feel seen.
Relationships > recruiting.
