Why does the pork industry need the Save Our Bacon Act? Because without it, states will force it to make good on its promises to ditch gestation crates.

In 2011, Smithfield — the largest US pork producer — promised to phase out gestation crates within six years. Its CEO said customers didn't like the crates 'and we've heard them loud and clear.'

But 15 years later, most Smithfield contract farms still keep sows crated for their entire lives.

Smithfield's company-owned farms claim to use 'group housing,' but even those sows spend roughly half their lives in crates.

The industry made its promises. It broke them. Now it wants a law to make sure no state can hold it accountable.

The e/acc crowd says we can't regulate AI because it would slow the coming techno-utopia.

But look at what else prominent e/acc voices mock or oppose: basic child-safety rules, anti-malarial bed nets, and now efforts to curb factory farming.

Their techno-utopia is apparently offshore casinos for humans, factory farms for animals, and strip mines turning the rest of the galaxy into compute.

Just an astonishingly bleak vision of the future.

Three powerful pieces on the Save Our Bacon Act dropped this weekend: from @NickKristof, @kathleenparker, and @Noahpinion.

This is much needed. The mainstream media has been silent on what may be the greatest legislative threat to animal welfare in a generation.

There's been a grassroots revolt against the Act on X -- led by conservatives. But only one network has covered it: Fox, thanks to @TomiLahren.

This is exactly what the pork industry wants. It knows the Act is deeply unpopular. Its paid-for politicians can only pass it if they're never forced to defend it publicly.

They were hoping you wouldn't notice. They're now hoping you'll stay quiet. Prove them wrong.

Prominent conservatives are speaking out against animal abuse in labs and on factory farms.

This isn't new. Sen. Bob Dole (R-KS) led the last two major federal animal welfare reforms — for farm animals in 1978 and lab animals in 1985.

That was 40 years ago. Since then, the pharma and factory farm lobbies have captured both parties and blocked every serious federal reform.

Now they're trying to wipe out the strongest state animal welfare laws too — through the Save Our Bacon Act buried in the farm bill.

They're try to sell this as a conservative policy. It isn't.

What they look like in *practice* is people being varying degrees of nice.

Nope.

Likewise, do you ever see a negative utilitarian plotting to end all sentient life in the universe?

Or do you see them going vegan and writing endless blog posts debating consciousness?

It's just prejudice and fearing a boogeyman outgroup.
