Housing is the largest single expense for most Americans and has been at the frontline of “affordability” politics. At the Cato Institute, we developed federal, state, and local policy ideas to improve housing affordability.

A new Global Justice Report associated with @PikettyWIL urges near-zero growth for rich countries, sweeping redistribution, global wealth taxes, shorter working hours, and rapid decarbonization. In a new Cato Podcast episode, @MrRBourne talks to @Marian_L_Tupy about what degrowth gets wrong—and why its promise of justice masks a dangerous agenda of government control.

For far too long, the Jones Act has restricted how goods move between U.S. ports. Supporters argue it protects American shipping, but the truth is it just raises costs for Americans.
When the Trump administration temporarily waived the law for energy products and fertilizer, more shipping options opened up, transportation costs fell, and fuel shipments surged.
This raises a bigger question: If the Jones Act has to be suspended whenever policymakers want goods to move more efficiently, why are we keeping the restriction at all?

Power given to your allies today will eventually belong to your opponents tomorrow. That's why limited government isn't a left or right issue. It's the foundation of individual liberty and a prosperous society. No matter who's in charge, constraints on power protect everyone.
In today's @CatoInstitute podcast, I talk about what "all men are created equal" actually means--and about a ton of other fun Declaration of Independence stuff. Check it out! https://t.co/mD27C6xwBH
Accepting more power for those you agree with means accepting more power for those you disagree with too. On Thursday, watch our new Learning Hub video on limited government—available on our YouTube channel.
A few weeks ago, I got to talk with @Matt_d_Mitchell about how socialist ideas are perceived in the US and how our generation has done a poor job warning the next one about what happens when socialism is actually implemented. Watch the interview here:

Many who support socialism today might not be aware of the death toll that enforcing socialist policies have caused. Inevitably, central planning requires an authoritarian state that limits individual rights, and the consequences can be fatal.
Did We Forget the Cost of Socialism?
Socialist economies have repeatedly struggled with shortages, corruption, black markets, and authoritarianism.
From the Soviet Union and Maoist China to Venezuela and modern Western politics, @barbaragrdv and @Matt_d_Mitchell discuss the historical record of socialism and the flaws behind its failures.

Both the Democrat and Republican parties are willing to dabble in socialism on some issues, @Matt_d_Mitchell explains.
Tomorrow, watch our new interview, where Mitchell explores the definition and consequences of socialism, on our YouTube channel.
More housing supply means lower prices, but it also means more people. Economist @bryan_caplan explains how you can't have one without the other. The benefits and problems of living in a densely populated area come hand in hand, and most people prefer to have both.
