Dear President H. W. Bush and Senator Ted Kennedy,

I am writing as a recent STEM graduate who finished at the top of my class in 2026.

I did everything that was asked of me. High grades. Strong projects. Internships when I could get them. It was the path promised to those who could complete the coursework. I believed the degree would open doors.

It has not.

I have gone through interview after interview with no offer. At the same time, many of the foreign students I studied alongside already had jobs waiting for them before they graduated. Some received offers during their junior year. I am still sending out applications and receiving short, impersonal rejections or silence.

You both helped create the H-1B program in 1990 with the promise that it would fill temporary skill gaps and bring the best talent to America. That is not what I am seeing.

What I am seeing is a system that often prefers workers who arrive with sponsorship already arranged while American graduates who trained here are left competing for fewer and fewer open seats. The shortage never seemed to close. The opportunities for people like me only got tighter.

You will never sit in the position I am in, watching classmates from other countries move into roles while I keep hearing that the market is competitive.

Was this the plan from the start, or were you too ignorant to understand the long-term result?

The harm is quiet and personal. It lands on students who did the work and still cannot find a place in the profession they prepared for.

That is the part of the promise that did not come true.

At a backyard barbecue in Texas, a football landed at my feet.

I picked it up and threw it back.

It flew like a wounded duck. It wobbled. It embarrassed my ancestors.

The yard went quiet.

A man named Hank set down his tongs, walked over, and picked up the ball. He did not mock me. He had the face of a doctor who has found something treatable.

"Fingers on the laces," Hank said. "Like this."

He adjusted my grip. He moved my elbow two inches.

"Now snap the wrist. Let her spiral."

I threw. Wounded duck.

"Again."

For forty minutes, in front of his own party, Hank stood beside me while I threw terrible passes to his patient teenage son. The brisket waited. Hank did not care. The grip was not right yet.

Inside I said: THIS MAN IS IGNORING HIS OWN GUESTS TO REPAIR THE THROW OF A FOREIGN STRANGER. THE MEAT IS RESTING. HE HAS CHOSEN ME OVER THE MEAT.

On the forty-first throw, the ball left my hand and did not wobble.

It spun. Tight. Clean.

A spiral.

His son caught it and screamed. Hank grabbed my shoulder and shook me like a vending machine.

"THAT'S IT! THAT'S THE ONE! YOU FELT THAT?!"

I felt it.

I have swung a blade ten thousand times chasing one perfect cut.

The spiral is the same religion.

Hank is the same master.

The backyard is the same dojo.
