this is not only beyond wrong, but also irresponsibly dangerous and the arrogance of saying something like this while being so embarrassingly ignorant of basic female biology makes it even worse.
postpartum depression is a real psychiatric disorder that affects roughly 1 in 7 women after giving birth and no, men cannot suffer from it
during pregnancy, a woman's hormonal environment changes completely: estrogen and progesterone rise enormously, along with neurosteroids like allopregnanolone that directly affect GABA signaling in the brain (responsible for reducing stress in the brain)
after birth, the placenta comes out (creating a massive internal open wound on top of everything) and within days all those hormones crash.
the female brain and body have to readjust to one of the most extreme hormonal swings a human being can experience, while she's recovering from childbirth, barely sleeping, breastfeeding, and responsible for keeping a completely helpless brand new human alive.
men simply cannot experience that
yes, fathers can get depressed after having a child too. but their body didn't spend 9 months building a new endocrine organ and then lose it in a matter of minutes. still, also male depression should not be taken lightly. it's less common, but can become severe.
in roughly 1-2 cases per 1000 births, women can also develop postpartum psychosis and completely lose contact with reality: delusions, paranoia, mania, hallucinations, etc. (obviously this doesn't justify or excuse murdering kids)
the fact that hormonal swings around childbirth can, in rare cases, contribute to women behaving in completely irrational and even dangerous ways should be taken seriously and talked about, not reduced to "women are selfish and don't like being de-centered"
and this is why saying shit like this is actually dangerous and Matt is incredibly irresponsible for saying this (either genuinely ignorant or evil, or both)
a woman suffering from PPD can already feel like she's failing as a mother (she's not) and now you have people telling her that she's not sick, she's just selfish.
even worse, you have husbands listening to people like matt and thinking their wife just needs to toughen up instead of realizing that something may actually be wrong and helping her.
some women are unlucky enough to suffer from postpartum depression, some are even more unlucky and marry a man like matt who tells them it's because they're selfish.
the confidence with which people talk about things they very clearly know nothing about will never stop amazing me.
You can despise what Lindsay Clancy did and think she deserves capital punishment, while also acknowledging the fact that PPD and post-partum psychosis are real physiological phenomena. It is not a justification for murder. But it's not "selfishness" either.
Two things can be true at once.
1) Things are way too expensive right now. Food, gas, groceries- all high.
2) The Gen Zers bitching about it all also get a daily iced coffee, wear Alo apparel, and donât know what it means to live within their means.
Yes, we generally are much more prosperous and comfortable than our great grandparents. We are much more prosperous and comfortable than people in third world countries. Thatâs true. Itâs also an incredibly unpersuasive and irrelevant answer to the affordability crisis.
You would not be satisfied with ineffective and counterproductive medical treatments just because itâs still better than the treatments your ancestors received. You would not be satisfied with a car that only goes 20 miles an hour just because itâs still faster than the horse and buggy your great great grandpa drove around. You would not be satisfied with a house with a leaky roof just because it at least shields you from the elements better than the mud hut African tribesmen live in.
We are an advanced modern first world country. We are supposed to be the greatest country in the world. Thatâs the standard we should hold ourselves to. And in that country â not an African country, not a country in 1887 â a working man should be able to afford a house and groceries. Thatâs not entitlement. Itâs not expecting the government to solve everything for us. It doesnât mean that those things should be provided via government program. Itâs just simply the most basic imaginable standard. If weâre falling short of it â and we are â then we need to figure out why, and how to fix it. Itâs that simple. This really shouldnât be controversial.
A pantomine horse isnât a horse.
An open secret isnât a secret.
A hot dog isnât a dog.
A shrinking violet isnât a violet.
Crowâs feet arenât feet.
Fair gameâs not a game.
Trans women arenât women.
Gas is almost a dollar cheaper across the state line, but Governor Whitmer would rather play the blame game than save her constituents a single dime. She refuses to give Michigan gas tax relief no matter how high pump prices climb.
1) The US already collects FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS OF TAX REVENUE A YEAR. The idea that you need to collect even more taxes â when you parasites already confiscate the equivalent of Elonâs entire net worth five times over, every year â is lunacy. Stop wasting billions of dollars a month of stupid bullshit. How about that for an idea?
2) We do not need more children in taxpayer funded daycare centers. Our goal should be precisely the opposite of that. We need more women at home raising their kids.
I wonder if there was some previous form of social technology that allowed women to stay home due to the biological realities of their gender while still contributing to society in an incredibly meaningful and valuable way
How come these men never think to sell their own bodies?
Why is it always women having to pay the price with their bodies, and souls for both the lack of protection from their fathers and the degenerate freaks willing to violate innocent girls.
England produced a Super Chad and you're not giving him the role of James Bond? This is why the UK will fall - not promoting its best genetics. He should do five 007 movies in 10 years and then pass the torch.
