2. Victor Wembanyama

Wembanyama and Jokić affect the game in completely opposite ways. Wembanyama has a never-before-seen level of influence on every other possession from his defensive presence alone, and EPV and ARC struggle to quantify the extent.

Wembanyama was the best player last season, including the playoffs. He led the 2026 playoffs in P-ARC (+8.38 over 22 games; next among regulars, Jalen Brunson at +6.51), and his defensive P-ARC (+4.59) is second since 1998.

Had the 11th-best single postseason as well (since 98)

His defensive impact was strong enough to lift a young, hungry team full of potential to the Finals years ahead of schedule. He still needs to ramp up his minutes. But by possession he is LOBOS.

Limitations

Wembanyama, offensively, is nowhere near his peak. His vertical spacing warps the floor and creates a good amount of gravity, but his on-ball creation and efficiency still leave a lot to be desired: his own mid-range is in the 3rd percentile and his lineups' turnover rate in the 8th. He still needs to ramp up his minutes. He ran up against his perfect foil in a very physical Knicks team, with a center who could pull him away from the rim and a big man who could drive at him with his frame.
