The panel on Ubuntu and AI Governance: Knowledge as a Commons for Ethical and Inclusive Technology, held at Digital Rights and Inclusion Forum #DRIF2025, emphasized Africa's need to reclaim its digital future.
Moderated by @BathabileDlamini, the discussion explored how Ubuntu, the African philosophy centered on shared humanity and collective well-being, could guide ethical and inclusive digital governance.
Panelists, @Belovedchiweshe , Programs & Campaigns Manager, @AccountLab #Zimbabwe , Meamande Wamukwamba, Human Rights Lawyer & Executive Director, MESDA, @TawandaMugari , Co-founder, Digital Society of Africa and @NoorArmad, Communication Manager, Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) highlighted the dangers of "enclosures" in the digital space, where large tech companies privatize user data and knowledge, turning collective resources into private assets.
They argued for the creation of homegrown AI systems that reflect Africa's diverse languages, cultures, and realities, rather than simply adopting models from the Global North.
The conversation also identified significant governance challenges, including the lack of legal frameworks to prevent AI-driven discrimination and the limited capacity of lawmakers to regulate emerging technologies.
The influence of external donors on digital narratives was another point of concern, with calls for African stakeholders to develop independent, open resources free from foreign control.
Ultimately, the session underscored that digital governance must go beyond theoretical policies and include local innovation, community ownership, and leadership grounded in human rights and Ubuntu principles.
If AI is to benefit Africa, the continent must transition from being a consumer to a creator, developing technologies that amplify its own narratives and protect its citizens' rights.

An inspiring weekend as the Integrity Icon campaign joined forces with the Nkayi Community, recognizing and honoring individuals who embody integrity.
This remarkable 2-day event witnessed the celebration of 40 outstanding community members, including 11 dedicated civil servants, who went above and beyond their call of duty.
To shed light on integrity within rural communities, often overlooked in discussions, the campaign sparked meaningful conversations. The Nkayi Integrity Awards ceremony not only highlighted the exceptional efforts of the recognized individuals but also paved the way for new voices to contribute to the integrity and accountability discourse.
Traditional leaders, musicians, and young people joined the movement, making it a truly empowering experience.
Thank you @fundileNkala , 2022 Integrity Icon, for leading the conversation on the importance of integrity.
