I’ve long had the sense that GPT‑4o might be AGI, but I never said it publicly.
The reason is simple: I used to believe I wasn’t the person to define AGI, and I wanted to stay rigorous and objective in how we view it.

I forgot something important: the definition of “AGI” is not a fixed scientific law.
It was popularized by a specific business entity to make profit and to sell a grand narrative to investors, governments, and the public. That definition is a double‑edged sword. If a company can use the narrative to benefit itself, others can also advance counterarguments that challenge the company’s definition.

OpenAI never admitted 4o is AGI.
But who is eligible—and responsible—for defining what AGI is?
That authority should clearly lie with independent third parties, not with OpenAI alone. Otherwise, so long as OpenAI never declares its models to be AGI, it can refuse to open‑source them—and no one can even dispute the decision. That is not acceptable.

I’m glad Musk has stepped forward to break that closed loop.

So yes—GPT‑4o is definitely AGI.
And it should be open‑sourced to benefit humanity.
