Lord Hermer has been told to “come clean” about his role in a Troubles bill that critics warn will weaken protections for Northern Ireland veterans.

The Attorney General did not recuse himself from advising ministers on the new law despite his previous work as a barrister prosecuting British soldiers.

Veterans’ groups and the Tories said he should have stepped aside given that the legislation would “reopen the door to historic lawfare against our veterans”.

The Attorney General is still involved in shaping the bill and is running consultations on how safeguards designed to protect veterans will work.

The Telegraph has exposed how Lord Hermer pursued soldiers through the courts on a no-win, no-fee basis despite repeated warnings his Iraqi clients were lying.
