Ali Zarei is 27. In 2022, during the Woman, Life, Freedom protests, security forces shot him in the eye with pellets and took the sight from that eye. He later lived in Germany. On 28 April 2026, after returning to Iran, he was arrested by Intelligence Ministry agents. He was sent to Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.

Branch 23 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced him to death on the charge of “corruption on earth.” The accusations include political activity, propaganda against the state, and leaving and entering the country. Ali has said he committed no violence. From prison he said his death sentence had been upheld, that he was getting closer to the gallows with every hour, and that he needed the public, human rights advocates, and the United Nations to be his voice.

On 21 September he was moved from his ward into solitary confinement. For a prisoner already on death row, that transfer is one of the most dangerous signs there is. Rights groups warn his execution may be imminent.

This is the plea: do not let Ali Zarei be hanged in silence.
Share his name. Share his story. Tag journalists, members of parliament, the German government, the EU, Amnesty, Human Rights Watch, and the UN. Demand to know where he is, what condition he is in, and that this sentence not be carried out.

He already lost an eye for protesting. He should not lose his life for the same reason.

Be his voice. Save Ali Zarei. Do not let him be executed.
