Here’s a really strong statement of opposition to the FILTER Act (B26-436) from Gary Thompson, former Chair of the DC Board of Elections (Jan 2022-July 2026). Worth reading all 9 pages of it - pages 1-4:
@ankitjaindc Another election-prep item is that Logic & Accuracy testing for our voting equipment started today; I was able to witness some of that at BOE's V St warehouse. DC is so far along in the process of preparing for the Nov. election it'd be truly crazy to change the system now...
@JessicaBRiedl You might be double-counting Bush's two SCOTUS seats in '00 and '04? Unless you mean his 1st term was necessary to get to his 2nd term when the appointments happened.
I might raise 2024 a spot or two but since we're in the middle of it I guess we don't really have hindsight yet.
Love this idea for tallying ranked choice voting elections featured in today's @ExpandDemocracy release of the Democracy Lab - real-time results with full transparency. https://t.co/3jW5OGjj7j
@JoeySchmittPhD@AlexKomaDC Is 30%...an aspirational figure? Because the runner-up winner in our At-Large races hasn't hit that percentage since 2010.
2024: 23.19%
2022: 21.91%
2020: 14.77%
2018: 26.47%
2016: 24.54%
2014: 15.14%
2012: 20.18%
2010: 30.62%
@Kurtesque91 I'm not going to sit here and say people voted for or against 83 based on the selected two-winner system, though. There are pros and cons to all systems. I think the Council needs a better process than a rushed-through amendment literally in the middle of the election.
@Kurtesque91 It actually came up more than you'd think- the "No on 83" crew kept trying to say RCV used fractions in an attempt to make it sound more confusing. We obviously got to reply that our system did not use fractional votes; this led to frequent discussion of the two-winner system.
@_DreamWeaver I think you're making a mental leap and assuming every Democrat is going to fall outside the "those who don't rank the Democrat #1" pool. I'm a Democrat, and I'm certainly not going to automatically rank the (D) nominee #1. If I like an (I) candidate better, I'll rank them #1.
Join us at the Wilson Bldg Tuesday 7/14 to urge @councilofdc to VOTE NO on:
- Their Emergency RCV bill
- The FILTER Act

The council cannot push these awful reforms at the last minute before summer recess, behind the backs of DC voters
@irene_koo (11/11) Anyway, I'd be happy to talk about this more. I don't usually engage this much on socials but if you want to continue chatting about this email me: [email protected]
(1/14) For all the talk of the bottoms-up system "locking out" some voters from choosing both seats, I could just as easily say that this proposed switch to Sequential RCV would give Democrats two votes while everyone else only gets one.
NEWS: The D.C. Council is taking up an emergency bill next Tuesday to change how votes are tabulated in the election for two At-Large CMs in November. Concerns were raised that the existing ranked-choice voting tabulation system would lock some voters out of choosing both seats.
@irene_koo (10/11) Also for what it's worth, I've been pretty surprised to see some that had been advocating for STV be kind of "meh, this is fine" about this abrupt proposed switch. Sequential RCV moves us AWAY from STV. Thinking they are both preferable to bottoms-up makes little sense.
