Juneteenth commemorates not the day that Black people won freedom in this country, but the day Black people finally received word of that freedom, more than two years after Emancipation.
While we celebrate freedom on Juneteenth fully and unabashedly, we are also reminded that the powerful will try to rob us of our freedoms if left to their own devices.
But the power of the people is absolute— as long as we continue to exercise it, and guard against the forces that seek to divide us.
