Towards the end of his testimony, Prof Fong makes the heartfelt case that to understand the Covid impact on the NHS you have to go *beyond* data - "there is more to know than you can count".
His testimony was *so important* /END
Smaller hospitals in particular ran out of drugs, equipment, nurses, PPE. They felt abandoned. There is zero doubt that the NHS was overwhelmed during both of the first two waves.
By June 2021 ICU staff described themselves as broken.
Here Prof Fong explains how every nurse he met was traumatised by watching patients die, being only able to hold up ipads to their relatives and how it went against their normal practice of trying to ensure a dignified death, with family there.
And here he breaks down while explaining the absolute trauma experienced by smaller hospitals in particular - the "healthier" ICU patients were transferred out, leaving them coping with so much death.
They felt so alone.
Prof @Kevin_Fong giving the most devastating and moving testimony to the Covid Inquiry of visiting hospital intensive care units at the height of the second wave in late Dec 2020.
The unimaginable scale of death, the trauma, the loss of hope.

Tozorakimab was well tolerated, and post hoc analyses suggest that treatment effects may be enhanced in patients with severe COVID-19 and those with high baseline levels of serum IL-33/sST2. These effects will be investigated in a global phase 3 study. https://t.co/jkVoH3nVDo
Plaque unveiled yesterday in Brampton, Cumbria, remembering +100 Basque children (of 4000 who escaped from Franco to UK in 1937), and locals who helped them. Carmen, now 94, still lives in nearby Carlisle. Many thanks to @markmmcalindon for sending
And work by @basquechildren

Intensive Care is an incredibly rewarding but sometimes gruelling specialty even in ‘normal’ times. The psychological impact of the pandemic on health care professionals must not be underestimated @ICS_updates@SteveBarclay

Last Friday the @WHO Emergency Committee met to consider whether #COVID19 remains a Public Health Emergency of Intl. Concern. In their view, the outbreak remains a global health emergency, and I agree. This morning, I updated the #EB152 on the way forward. https://t.co/LNH6n5s0jd
After the mosque attacks, my then 8-year-old wrote to Jacinda Ardern, thanking her for being Prime Minister and saying she thought it was a good idea to ban the dangerous guns. Today seems like a good day to re-post the letter she got back a few days later.
A heartfelt thank you by @WHO’s @DrMikeRyan to all of our incredible health workers around the world who have worked tirelessly to keep us safe. They are underpaid, overworked, and often not given the respect they deserve - we are truly grateful for all that you have done!

But NHS has other pressures too. Flu admissions are increasing and ICU Flu admissions now much higher than Covid ones. Mostly affecting youngest and oldest. Ditto for RSV resp illness - esp under 5s. 6/xx
