The philosophy program at Resolution is growing! If you're motivated to work on helping solve AI alignment, we'd love for you to consider joining us.
Apply here: https://t.co/YC65hYbOVv
Deadline: September 30, 2026 — we'll review applications as they come in.
You don't need a Philosophy PhD to apply. We're building an interdisciplinary team and welcome candidates from different research/professional backgrounds. More info on the research agenda is in the job posting.
We couldn't be more thrilled to have Seth join us at Resolution. Seth is not only a tremendous philosopher, but he's an amazing ecosystem builder. He's helped create new infrastructure in philosophy and AI (journals, institutions, conferences), mentored many, many folks in the field, and shown how dangerous philosophers can be when you give them some compute. I'm so excited for the work he'll do at Resolution as well as JHU!
Personal update!
Wait for it....
wait for it....
No I'm not joining an AI company! In fact I am, as soon as my visa is suitably adjusted, going to be joining @resolution_org part time as part of @bebacibralic's philosophy team, alongside my existing role at the JHU School of Government and Policy! Cannot wait to get cracking working with GOATs like Beba, @geoffreyirving@danielmurfet@DavidDAfrica@jacob_pfau
I think that AGI alignment and governance are the most urgent and important challenges facing society today. While I welcome the AI companies' efforts in this direction, I do not believe that we can rely on them to make powerful AI go well. God even if we could, we shouldn't want to. You can't rely on noblesse oblige for the preservation of core liberal values. This is work that has to be done independently, in the public interest.
Resolution is going to be one of the best orgs in the world working on AGI alignment, and at SGP (along with @ghadfield@nickacaputo@zhitzig and others) we're building one of the world's best groups working on AGI governance. I'm so thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to building both. These are two orgs that have shed all institutional inertia to focus on doing work that actually matters, and will help realise the preservation and renewal of liberal democratic values through the AI transition.
Things are effing crazy in AI right now. It is easy to feel as though we lack agency, that gradual disempowerment has already begun. I think the answer to that is to BUILD THINGS. And I'll add: both @resolution_org and SGP are hiring! Join us!!

@tkukurin We're still in the early days of figuring out which kinds of interventions we want to study, but we'll almost certainly be focusing on post-training. This limits us somewhat, but it's what's feasible in the foreseeable future
We are also interested in proposals for new philosophical research that could improve our understanding of alignment or alter how alignment research is conducted. The team is new, and the people we hire now will play a significant role in shaping what it becomes. If you have great ideas that seem outside of this research remit, you should share them and apply for the role!
Epistemic and safety risks of automating conceptual reasoning. Conceptual reasoning work is increasingly being delegated to models, including within alignment research itself. It's an open question whether this should happen at all, and, if so, where the limits should be. We want to map the risks and help determine which forms of conceptual work can be delegated, under what conditions, and with what forms of oversight. We are also interested in methods for validating model-generated conceptual work, and in the scientific norms and evidential standards that can help govern AI-assisted alignment research.
I’ve joined Resolution as the philosophy research lead. I’m excited to work with @geoffreyirving@danielmurfet and the whole team to help advance AI safety (and to raise the Aussie headcount at the org...) Thanks also to the RANDites I’ve had the pleasure of working with these last few years — I’ll be staying in the family as an adjunct researcher.
At Res, we’re building out our full philosophy research agenda and are broadly interested in the conceptual foundations of AI safety as well as normative computing. Some of the areas we’re keen to explore in the near future are character formation and training, epistemic standards for automating R&D, and conceptual engineering to advance alignment research. We'll be hiring philosophers and researchers to join the philosophy team. More to come!
I'm bad at social media, so please email [email protected] to get in touch. (And for those wondering what I'm doing on X after all my years of complaining and resisting...все там будем!)
