@qalam_writes There’s a misconstrual between hayaa and the English word “shame”. There are many things that are not shameful but are meant to be private. Like a woman’s beauty, a person’s awrah, intimate relations between husband and wife. Beautiful and purposeful creations, but private.
@UM_MCMXCIX@razor_772 Thus, unless your country/mosque’s sighting criteria permits sighting via IR camera data interpreted on pixels (i.e it was biologically impossible to see with your eyes) then in general, Saudi reports should be excluded.
@UM_MCMXCIX@razor_772 There are other nuances: Saudi gvt follows conjunction calculations, but astronomers in Saudi try to sight it - using IR astronomy (I.e on a digital screen and not with eyes using special techniques). Following “sightings” should still take into acct criteria of what counts.
Moon not sighted: RAMADAN TO BEGIN MONDAY NIGHT. (Fast on Tuesday)
We did not receive any reliable reports of the new crescent moon (hilal) of Ramadan being sighted anywhere in the world via NAKED-EYE on Sunday, March 10th. For more info: https://t.co/KoeaDVnqsc #Ramadan📷
@ibnsayeddc@TwittPix@Crescentwatch Without further info, it’s best to take it at face value: “it was sighted” somewhere, but they did not claim to see it locally.
We went sighting in New Mexico which has clearer skies and less humidity than Florida, higher elevation and farther west. We did not see it.
@insharifain Is there any more information about 1) who saw it 2) what optical or digital aids were used and 3) what time was it spotted (before or after sunset?)
So far there aren’t any naked eye or even binocular reports of moon sighting that I can find publicly reported.
@MuslimBibliophi@KimIversenShow@ChrisLynnHedges While I don’t agree with everything SHY says, his viewpoint is always interesting and worth considering. I think some people don’t appreciate true freedom of thought and so villify him for not conforming to their own perspective. We need to respect different opinions.
@MuslimBibliophi Yeah it’s a valuable resource but I do wish they didn’t advertise it as a history book for learning about actual events, given the heavy racial biases in the text.
@loverofthepious@ShaheenShahid19@Mufti_Muhammad_ Actually Saudi uses the craziest telescopes of them all so you’ll have to consider that. Most sighting groups also sight with naked eye but SA goes all out with infrared filters and sometimes ccd images and daytime sightings too
@Mufti_Muhammad_ What is the stance if the moon is sighted using an infrared filter (invisible to the human eye) and only recorded on ccd image? Would it take a similar ruling to whether a security footage counts as a witness?
@Mufti_Muhammad_ There are fiqh questions that need addressing. The sighting reports from SA come from astronomy teams who use a) infrared filters on b) telescopes and c) possibly sighting during the daytime or d) exclusively with ccd sensors. Do these qualify for “witness” according to fiqh?
@imam_marc@Musa_Maliki_ “Global sighting” only makes sense if you track westward from the sighting country, not eastward lol. Otherwise people will wake up in the morning to fast and find out it’s Eid. SA has followed calculations for years.
@muhiblog @Musa_Maliki_ They can photograph it using unconventional methods, like ccd with IR filters and data processing. But you cannot see it with your eyes, with photons, no. At that point it’s like taking security camera footage. Evidence of conjunction but no witnesses of the actual crescent.
@DrUsaama@YBirt It is also partly the responsibility of all of us. If we all revived the sunnah of moonsighting, then it would be far easier to organize local sighting reliably. When the masses revive the sunnah then inshaAllah change will be easy.
@ManchestxrUtd @karsbreanne In this depraved time yes people should follow the local mosque but the sunnah is for the community to sight the moon altogether, not sitting inside waiting for an announcement. It is supposed to be an obvious community event every month.
