UCL researcher and RFL nephrologist. Interested in CKD in the UK and abroad, alongside politics, bicycles and saxophones. Views my own and no medical advice.
First steps in efforts to characterise the burden of CKDu across different regions. Fantastic work led by Charlotte in collaboration with so many brilliant investigators from around the world.
If we understand where it is, maybe we can understand what it is.

@valerie_luyckx@eric_weinhandl Maybe not a surprise? Size of effect larger than I expected. And GBD data suggests increased CKD morbidity in some, but by no means all, hot countries.
Also a first attempt at disentangling heat from access to care and other important context specific effects on eGFR decline.
@valerie_luyckx@eric_weinhandl Thanks both. Eric absolutely correct re: aim of the study. Subgroup analysis shows no evidence for a difference in association by DAPA-CKD study arm (in the paper).
Registration is now open for the UCL Infectious & Global Nephrology Course 22 – 24 March. The course is online this year. Fees include access to the recorded talks. More info/online booking:

Real privilege to be part of this with such a great range of studies presented from across the globe. Diverse approaches but important insights from all of them. Lots to learn and huge potential for collaboration. Let’s solve #CKDu
A very fruitful meeting currently taking place with the ISN i3C Symposium on Studies focused on #CKDu: Works in Progress. Thank you all for your attendance.

Great to work with such a fabulous group of front line clinicians from across our city.
Important also to reflect on the amazing contributions of nursing colleagues, AHPs, and volunteers from across our community without whom the dialysis machines wouldn’t have kept running.
Patients receiving in-center hemodialysis treatment face unique challenges during the pandemic. This study found that COVID-19 rates of in center-hemodialysis populations relate to individual factors, underlying community transmission, unit size and layout https://t.co/C8OAl2rITy
Our final blue plaque of the year celebrates the Physicist and Champion of Science, Abdus Salam! 🔵 Salam's work on electroweak theory contributed to the discovery of the Higgs boson particle – the 'God particle' which gives everything mass.
@Roxytonin Fantastic work Laurie. I was wondering whether you guys might address this. Caveats accepted - really inportant evidence on such a key question. https://t.co/BQqQQIjDWb
Great to see this out. Impossible without the truly multidisciplinary team, Athina Dritsoula, Maria Kislikova, Amin Oomatia, @awebster90, @toates_19, @StephanBeck6 et al. and of course funding from the brilliant @Kidney_Research
