#Ethiopia’s war on its future: A generational crisis in the making
In this must-read commentary, Beniam Daniel Darge, outlines the alarming trajectories Ethiopia’s silent but devastating war on its future: a war against its own human capital. With over 9 million children out of school and 35% of school-aged youth not in classrooms, the collapse of education systems - especially in the war-hit regions like #Amhara, #Oromia, and #Tigray- is setting the stage for generational setbacks. The deliberate targeting of educators and the repurposing of schools into military camps deepen this crisis. "Empty schools," he warns, "mean empty futures," as missed early education disrupts brain development, emotional regulation, and cognitive resilience.
The writer also highlights how war and neglect are eroding Ethiopia’s brain capital through severe malnutrition and trauma. With nearly 37% of children under five stunted and 22% of the population undernourished, the cognitive potential of an entire generation is being compromised. He connects early-life undernutrition with irreversible damage to brain volume, memory, and learning.
He warns that unless urgent and unified action is taken, Ethiopia risks losing its brightest minds to brain drain and disillusionment. Young people, uneducated and unemployed, face a growing risk of recruitment by militant groups, trafficking, and substance abuse. This is not just a youth crisis- it’s a national emergency.
“The cost of inaction,” Beniam warns, “is unthinkable: a country robbed of its brightest minds is consigned to stagnation.”

@UNWatch@DanielsonKassa1 and people wonder why the UN has lost its credibility. How is Eritrean leadership allowed to chair a human right council forum with that rap sheet?
Local residents in Arsi where mass killings happened a few days ago are saying anyone in the area who picked up and buried citizens killed a few days ago, wore mourning clothes, or was a relative of the deceased is being hunted down and arrested.
Residents say the number of people arrested by local officials, accused of being 'collaborators with the enemy' and 'leaking information,' has now exceeded 100.
Addis Standard confirmed this today and published news on it, mentioning that the number of detainees is over 50:
It is now becoming crystal clear who is behind the killings?
either they are embarrassed by their incompetence to protect innocent civilians or they are mad that the massacre they orchestrated is now clear to see for the world. In both cases the community is being punished for letting the international community see what christians endure in that region.
@megbasham Thank you for continuing to report on this. We now have a report that the government forces have arrested over 100 family and community members who burried the dead and reported the massacre. They are being punished for reporting these attacks to the international community. All points to the shady role of the govt in this.

News: More than 50 detained after burying victims of deadly attacks on #Orthodox faithful in #Ethiopia’s #Oromia
Addis Abeba — More than 50 residents in #Shirka Woreda, Southeast Zone (formerly #Arsi zone) of #Oromia region, have reportedly been detained after burying victims of recent attacks and assisting the wounded, residents told Addis Standard, raising concerns about a security crackdown in the aftermath of the killings.
The detention followed attacks by armed men in Chole and Birbo kebeles that left at least 48 people dead and more than 31 others injured, according to residents who spoke to Addis Standard. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church’s #Holy_Synod subsequently reported that 60 Orthodox Christians were killed in attacks on 20 and 24 October across two woredas in Arsi Zone.
Attempts by Addis Standard to contact the regional communication bureau for further comment were unsuccessful.

@vantbag@YekunoAmlak12 Couldn’t agree more. Their lives was not even worthy of an official statement from him. Utter and complete disregard for human life he is expected to protect.

Thank you @megbasham for your voice on this. Christians are under continued attacks in Ethiopia. Same terrorists have orchestrated repeat attacks targeting christians for their faith and burning down centuries old churches in the same area for months. Local and federal gov’ts ignored repeated cries for help from christians which begs the question if some in govt are perpetrators too.
Bishop, thank you for bringing a light to this terror. Ethiopia, one of the oldest christian civilizations in the world is now a place of persecution for Christians. Please continue your call to hold the perpetrators including the enablers in the regional govt and the federal government of Ethiopia accountable.
The gov’t of Ethiopia not only failed to protect christians in the area, it actively enabled their murder. Same armed groups have conducted mass executions in the same area repeatedly and the govt ignored cries for help from the church. The silence from leaders worldwide is deafening.
@CTVNews Orthodox christians being killed in one of the oldest chrstian civillizations for their faith. The world should hold the gov’t that enables these continued terror.@MarkJCarney@Pontifex
URGENT: Targeted attacks against civilian Christian communities in Ethiopia’s Arsi zone continue to be downplayed while innocent lives are lost.
Silence equals impunity. We are calling on @StateDept, @USCIRF, @HouseForeign, @SenateForeign, @SecRubio, @USEmbassyAddis, @realDonaldTrump
to take immediate action:
- Impose the Global Magnitsky act on perpetrators and complicit officials.
- Demand accountability for human rights violations in Arsi.
- Protect international religious freedom.
