Credit card travel miles are such a scam. Let me share with you all my experience:
I’ve been accumulating Capital One Venture card miles for about 2 years.
The goal was the accumulate as many miles as possible to use for our Italy trip.
I was able to get 230,000 miles, which I thought was great and would cover at least all the flights.
I transferred all my points to Airfrance which has flights from NYC to Milan or Rome.
This was what I was told to do in order to maximize the credit card miles.
The flights are about 8 hours from NYC to Milan.
Mind you, I would be traveling with my wife and our two kids (ages 11 & 13) and with my 75 year old mother in law.
I go to start looking for flights to Milan to get the trip booked.
I then find out that direct flights are not available with reward miles.
The only flights available were connecting flights to Paris with a 1 day lay over.
So not only would I be inconvenienced by not having a direct flight, I would now have to get accommodations to stay a night in Paris.
I contact @CapitalOne to see what could be done about returning my miles and was told there’s no return of miles once transferred.
So basically, I saved all those miles just to have to come out of pocket $3,000 to get direct flights.
Needless to say, my points are still sitting in the AirFrance travel portal.
Since then, I’ve been so disappointed with this situation, I’ve stopped using the Venture card.
It should be well known to the customer that venture miles are not applicable to international direct flights.
Dave Ramsey and his team are never not going to tell someone who has cash to pay cash. Take it or leave it, its what they'll say, everytime. Why are you surprised? Avoiding debt is good advice, the average joe is never going to be in this situation.
Someone called into the Dave Ramsey show asking if he should take out a mortgage on a first-time home when he already has $1.2 million in liquid investments.
Married guy with kids from Pittsburgh. Makes $70,000; wife makes $55,000 a year. Wife wants to stay home with the kids. Looking at a $350,000 to $380,000 home in Eastern Pennsylvania.
Both Dave and John Delony were insistent on paying cash for the new home. Caller would have to pay capital gains taxes on the investment sales (they inherited about $500,000 and grew it to $1.2 million) and would maybe lose out on the mortgage interest deduction. Caller seemed to know this too but Ramsey and John were adamant that he pay cash for the home to avoid having a mortgage.
I know Greeen Bay has the lead, but I've seen this movie. We get conservative with a lead, let the other team come back and then turn it back on late in the game because we have to. LaFluer has coached this way his whole tenure. Don't let up, no matter the lead.
