Those radios give the gear a second, undocumented path to the internet. Global governments are reacting already: 🧵

This is truly bananas: all of Europe appears to have been seconds away a continent-wide blackout.
The grid frequency across continental Europe plunged to 49.85 hertz — just a hair above the red-line collapse threshold.
The normal operating frequency for Europe’s power grid is 50.00 Hz, kept with an extremely tight margin of ±0.1 Hz. Anything outside ±0.2 Hz triggers major emergency actions.
If the frequency had fallen just another 0.3 Hz — below 49.5 Hz — Europe could have suffered a system-wide cascading blackout.
At that threshold, automatic protective relays disconnect major power plants, and collapse accelerates.
And it's disturbingly easy to imagine multiple scenarios where that could have occurred...

🇪🇸SPAIN BLACKOUT: CYBERSECURITY AGENCY CAUGHT THE RED FLAGS DAYS BEFORE
Spain’s CNI — the agency in charge of spying and cybersecurity — spotted “a significant amount of unusual activity originating from North Africa" days before the power went out across Spain and Portugal.
Now they’re scrambling to figure out if it was a cyberattack, a tech meltdown with France… or just really bad luck.
Trains froze, airports jammed, traffic lights went dead — and now government crisis meetings are stacking up faster than the excuses.
So far: lots of theories, zero answers.

🇪🇸 SPAIN EYES CYBER ATTACK AS POSSIBLE CAUSE FOR BLACKOUT
Spain still doesn’t know what knocked out power across the country — but leaders are now saying a cyberattack is looking more and more likely.
Andalusia’s president told reporters it’s their top theory, and a crisis team has been set up to deal with the chaos.

The National Cryptologic Center (CCN), part of Spain’s National Intelligence Center (CNI), is currently investigating whether the widespread blackout that affected the peninsula's electricity grid earlier this afternoon is the result of a cyberattack. As the body responsible for safeguarding the cybersecurity of public institutions, the CCN, in collaboration with the National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE), plays a key role in protecting critical infrastructure from cyber threats. In recent months, Spain has become one of the most targeted countries for cyberattacks.
