@Benthamsbulldog Without a theory or explanation about which creatures feel pain or don't and how bad that pain is you can't begin the attempt to quantify pain in the way you're doing.
It doesn't have to be teleological or inexorably getting better. Knowledge can be lost, regressions occurs, but I think if you look at things on the scale of hundreds or thousands of years there's undoubtedly been progress. It's not inevitable though and not every moral fashion is form of progress
You're dodging the question. And I already told you I know where you're trying to go with this and I already agreed with you that it can't be all explicit knowledge. I'm calling the unconscious knowledge too because it's also learned (or capable of changing). If one isn't courageous it's possible to learn to have greater courage
