Well said David. Ian cared deeply about civil service as a calling. He embodied what all of us would want in a perfect civil servant: intelligence, humanity, humility, the highest integrity, quiet humour and he never took himself seriously.A huge loss for his family and his country.
Deeply saddened by the passing today of the Hon. Ian Shugart. A noble soul & superb public servant with an encyclopedic mind & wickedly dry sense of humour. A great loss to Canada given his potential future contributions. Condolences to all who loved this uncommonly good man.
Many thanks @spaikin for your kind https://t.co/SDau53aqzQ much world has changed since I was on your show; COVID then great vaccines in record time;climate change no longer something that affects others, rise of populism;we need science and values of science today more than ever
Kudos to Alan Bernstein of @CIFAR_News for his promotion within the Order of Canada to Companion, the highest level. He was on @TheAgenda some years ago talking about the importance of doubt in science: https://t.co/1v9CGp2Xgv #science#doubt
@jimtill. Jim thanks so much and thanks for setting an example for me and the other grad students who went through your lab. Your influence was more than you know.
A promotion (to Companion) within the Order:
Alan Bernstein, C.C., O.Ont.

For his enduring impact on Canadian health research and science policy as a visionary leader and steadfast supporter of future generations of researchers.
@A_Aspuru_Guzik A_Aspuru_Guzik, Thanks Alan. Our friendship is what has made science so rewarding for me.Your contributions to Canadian science show how a single outstanding scientist can have a huge impact on the research ecosystem. Science is all about great people.
Thanks @CIFAR_News. I have been truly fortunate to have great colleagues everywhere I’ve worked.Made what I did easy, fun. #science never been more important than now(pandemics, climate change, populism, distrust in institutions, etc).this honour for science not just for me.
Congratulations to CIFAR President Emeritus Alan Bernstein (@BernsteinAlan) on being named a Companion of the Order of Canada! Bernstein was honoured for his outstanding achievements and contributions to the country 👏
4/4) To be clear, I'm not saying there is *zero* risk. Rather, the risk is so hypothetical that it should be on the back-burner relative to more pressing issues.
In other words, it shouldn't be a *priority*, as the statement says.
We have more important stuff to worry about.
Congratulations to all our new CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars! We can’t wait to see the incredible research this cohort will undertake. 👏

@picardonhealth@SteinJanice@GlobeDebate Op-ed by @SteinJanice and myself today on critical importance of science to Canada. Our prosperity, health and capacity to contribute to global effort against climate change and next pandemic all depend on strength of our S and T. No time for more words. It’s time for action.

Wonderful to see girls and women in the choir at Coronation! I was one of them once and cherish this. Governments everywhere must recognise the contribution of glorious music to the well-being of all. The music made today’s celebration.
