On The FAN Hockey Show, Elliotte Friedman said the word this morning is that the #NJDevils heard how much interest there is in Cody Glass and they changed their mind re: giving him his QO.
I believe the deadline for QOs is at 5 pm today, so we’ll find out soon enough
@JKFischer@AATJerseyBlog The teams on the list are most likely the teams that can’t or won’t trade for him though like EDM,VGK, DAL,COL,TB,FLA,NYR,NYI,BOS,MTL
This is Tom Fitzgerald’s 6th season as Devils GM. In that time he has made only one in-season trade that hasn’t been within a week of the trade deadline. The player acquired was Jon Gillies. I don’t think a move is coming @ryannovoNHL
Two contract housekeeping items, since there is a lot of buzz today.
1. If "fake years" are added to a player's contract in his mid-30s as a method to suppress AAV and/or entice a signature with additional total dollars, #NHL will monitor and pursue later if proven as means of cap circumvention.
Example: If #Leafs want to offer Tanev 6 years x $4 million, and the goal (😉) is to only play three years and spend the last two or three on LTIR (😉), well then, that won't be looked upon fondly later. We've been through this once before, hence the 35+ contract rule.
Out of the 924 players in the #NHL this season, only one (Mark Giordano) played as a 40-year-old this season. He's also a little bit of a different case, won a Norris Trophy at age 35. No one could honestly think that signing Tanev to a deal that stretches into his 40-year-old season would be a deal on the up-and-up.
2. It is expressly prohibited in the CBA for a free agent to agree to a post-contract arrangement for services, say as a team ambassador or in player development, as a way of working outside of the salary cap. That type of deal is outlawed and the #NHL would very likely also consider that circumvention.
