Watts Bar Nuclear Unit 1 has completed a crucial step in its scheduled maintenance and refueling outage—offloading fuel from the reactor core. ⚛️
Highly skilled employees and contractors work safely to remove all 193 fuel assemblies during the refueling process, storing them in the spent fuel pool, where they stay until reactor core reload.
Watts Bar operates two nuclear units, each producing about 1,200 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 1.3 million homes!

The Kingston Gas Plant is coming to life in East Tennessee 🇺🇸⚡
Progress is well underway, with major milestones already reached—gas and steam turbines have been delivered, the first aeroderivative unit is set in place, and crews are steadily advancing critical foundation work across the site. Once complete, the facility will deliver 1,500 megawatts of new American-made energy to help power the region. 💡
🚨ATTN: Robotics and STEM teachers across the Tennessee Valley.🚨 Apply for up to $5,000 to purchase robotics kits, tools and materials and pay for competition entry fees! https://t.co/3dav3NMV1S
Are you currently running a robotics program in our region — or thinking about starting one? 🤖
Robotics programs help students develop critical thinking, teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills that’ll shape our future workforce! 💪 We’ve teamed up with our retiree organization, BVI, to support robotics programs right here in the Tennessee Valley to build tomorrow together. Programs can receive up to $5,000 to help cover supplies, tools, and robotics kits. Don’t wait — applications are open now through May 15!

The TVA Board has selected Director Mitch Graves to serve as Board Chair through April 1, 2027, and Director Jeff Hagood to serve as Board Chair following that term. Under their leadership, TVA is poised to unleash American energy and unlock opportunity across the Tennessee Valley. 🇺🇸
Enjoyed representing @TVAnews by bringing remarks to the annual @tnRiverLine Summit in Chattanooga tonight. RiverLine is an initiative of @utextension, and TVA is proud to be a principal partner along with @UTKnoxville.
The largest indoor 500 kV gas-insulated substation in the United States is now energized at our new Cumberland Combined Cycle Power Plant in Middle Tennessee.
The enclosed substation houses critical electrical switching equipment indoors, protecting it from extreme weather and temperatures. It is designed to route large amounts of electricity from the existing coal plant and the soon-to-be-completed combined-cycle natural gas plant across long distances, delivering reliable electricity across our growing region.
Our team, along with construction partner @Kiewit, will begin testing the new natural gas power plant this spring and summer. Once complete, the project will generate 1,450 megawatts of electricity, strengthening American energy dominance and powering more than 800,000 homes.🇺🇸
Heavy snow, ice, and rain caused lake levels at Great Falls Dam to rise sharply. To safely manage water levels and maintain flood control, spill gates are open, releasing approximately 188,000 gallons of water per second as part of our flood management procedures.
We will continue recovering flood storage, including spilling and generating hydroelectric power, over the next several days.
Steady progress being made on Winter Storm Fern recovery efforts. Shout out to all of the TVA/Local Power Company line crews who are working day and night to restore power to impacted communities.
⚠️ System Update
TVA’s power system performed well overnight, reaching an early morning peak of just under 33,000 megawatts during regionwide average temperatures of 13 degrees.
As recovery continues following the ice storm, TVA crews in North Mississippi are working to restore eight high-voltage transmission lines serving local power companies. Lines serving local power companies in Middle and West Tennessee have been restored. Work to restore local power systems across the region is ongoing.
Helicopters and drones are helping crews reach areas impacted by snow and ice, allowing restoration work to continue where access remains limited.
We appreciate the patience of those still impacted and the continued coordination with local power companies as restoration work continues.

Winter storm impacts continue across parts of our region. During the storm and through this stretch of extreme cold, TVA employees are working around the clock in challenging conditions to keep power plants running and electricity flowing.
From nuclear and hydro to coal and natural gas, our teams are actively monitoring, operating, and maintaining equipment to meet demand while restoration work continues. 🇺🇸💪
Crews are assessing storm damage and making repairs on the ground and in the air. When roads are impassable, helicopters and drones support restoration alongside teams working with local power companies. Damage and outages are affecting 12 of our 153 local power companies in parts of Middle and West Tennessee and Mississippi, where we also have damage to our transmission system.
TVA and local crews are working around the clock to restore power safely and quickly. All available resources will remain deployed until service is restored.
Winter Storm Fern continues to impact the Valley with a mix of rain, sleet, freezing rain, and snow. Overnight icing caused some power interruptions on both TVA transmission lines and local power company distribution systems, primarily in North Mississippi, North Alabama, Kentucky, southern Middle Tennessee, and parts of East Tennessee.
TVA and local power company crews are working to restore service safely where outages have occurred.
Messages including texts and emails claiming to be from the Tennessee Valley Authority or your local power company about scheduled or rolling power outages are not legitimate. Do not click on any links. Stay safe!
We have been selected by the @ENERGY for a major federal grant to advance the nation’s next generation of nuclear energy with the @gvhnuclear BWRX-300 small modular reactor at our Clinch River site near Oak Ridge, TN.
This investment strengthens America’s nuclear leadership by supporting a domestic nuclear energy manufacturing base, growing a skilled workforce, and advancing reliable and affordable energy for the future. 🇺🇸
