An Asian elephant calf has been born at Whipsnade Zoo in the UK

The baby was born to the elephant Donna after a 22-month pregnancy. This is not her first calf. The newborn weighs around 110 kg and stands less than one meter tall.

The zoo says the birth is especially important because Asian elephants are endangered. Staff describe the arrival of the calf as “hope for the future of the species.”
