In an hour I'll reveal how colleges adopt new technologies, tell stories of tech adoption gone wrong, and speculate on academic tech of the future. Join me on this thrilling (?) journey through bureaucratic administrative procedures! #s620#mla23 https://t.co/rtQWCEHh1C
The Committee on Information Technology puts on the best panels. <3 Thanks for a fantastic discussion @readywriting @briancroxall Svetlana Tyutina and Bryan Carter! #MLA23#s274
Perhaps with the rise of #digitalscholarship programs, we'll have new cohorts of builders and developers for the learning platforms of the future. #MLA23#s274
Higher ed actually has a lot of power over how software is built (not just ed tech software). Asserting and re-asserting the important of data privacy, accessibility, and affordability in our tools will change how new tools are built. #MLA23#s274
My takeaway: Having students DO something always wins. Don't build them something pretty to consume. Part of the problem of existing ed tech tools is that they're packaged and clean and hard to reshape. BUT they need to be packaged to be safe and stable... right? #MLA23#s274
#MLA23#s274 Google Docs is magical but cannot be treated as a solution for collaborative writing, says @briancroxall. Especially for institutions that have not specifically licensed it for classroom use. Students deserve to work in a data-safe environment.
Learning platforms are designed to lighten the load of the professor, not to privilege student learning, discussion, or collaboration, argues @briancroxall #MLA23#s274
Six years from my humanities PhD launching me into a (non-teaching) career I love, I'm presenting at #MLA23#s620 on actual technologist questions, rather than PhD career pathways. Bit nervous but should be interesting! Sat 5:15pm https://t.co/rtQWCEHh1C
Looking forward to #MLA23#s274 virtual session on "What do we want in a learning platform of the future?" noon today! https://t.co/SbcGMe0bva (I'm presenting tomorrow at the partner panel #s620 on research platforms.)
I recently got a more senior role and Stanford is hiring for my current role as an Academic Technology Specialist! https://t.co/Yp8E3VD2HM Great job for someone #withaphd#postac#altac, and/or with an #edtech background. Happy to answer questions!
This Humanities Pedagogy Collective Conference looks amazing, is free, and is being organized by some awesome people including @Jenae_Cohn.
Proposals by May 15 for the July 15 event! https://t.co/AJ2HjwdG8e
Idea: Recruit graduate students who can already describe where they're going to do their summer internships and how these internships tie into their dissertation research and their broad career plans.
(Also, have PhD students do summer internships.) #gradatwork
Love how @briandegrazia points to the symbolic moment of getting the graduate admissions letter. Could be a place to emphasize skills, habits of mind, and the many many career pathways that are possible with a humanities PhD. #gradatwork
Should humanities grad programs prioritize recruiting students with more experience, instead of those fresh out of undergrad? Strong "yes" consensus from our breakout group. #gradatwork
@JustinDMRogers Ooo maybe! I was thinking more or someone who would understand the needs of both the class and the cultural institution, help a faculty member structure their assignments, handle scheduling, run workshops to help students make their work more useful to the cultural org...
This conversation is making me wonder if some sort of project manager role could be a useful bridge between cultural organizations and academia--somebody who handles making collaboration as seamless as possible. It's true that it's more work for both groups. #gradatwork
