You are building rockets to take humanity to Mars, advancing AI and robotics, connecting the world, and thinking about the future of human civilisation.

Today, I am writing from Nepal, where our question about humanity's future is painfully immediate.

How do we survive what is happening to our mountains?

On August 26, a catastrophic glacier collapse sent ice, rock, mud and water through the Himalayan region. More than 1,200 lives have been lost, thousands remain missing, families have been displaced, and homes, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure have been destroyed.

Nepal is now facing billions of dollars in losses and reconstruction.

Yet Nepal contributes only around 0.1% of global greenhouse-gas emissions.

That is the painful inequality of climate change:

Those who contributed least can end up paying one of the highest prices.

I am not writing to blame you for this disaster.

In fact, Tesla and many of your ventures have challenged old industries and pushed cleaner technologies forward.

I am writing because you have something very few people in human history have had at this scale:

the resources, technology, influence and ability to move the world when you choose to.

So, Mr. Musk, I respectfully ask you to consider something bigger than disaster relief.

Lead a $1 Billion Nepal Reconstruction & Himalayan Resilience Challenge.

Start by committing $100 million of your own wealth and invite the world's billionaires, technology companies, foundations and innovators to join you.

Let it help rebuild the communities, homes and critical infrastructure Nepal has lost.

But let it also build something for the next generation:

better Himalayan monitoring, disaster prediction and early warning; resilient infrastructure; scientific research; mapping; communications; emergency-response technology; drones, AI and other solutions that can save lives before the next disaster becomes a tragedy.

Make it a transparent, Nepal-led, globally supported initiative, working with the best scientists, institutions and technologies from Nepal and around the world.

Not simply aid after people die.

Investment so fewer people have to die next time.

Nepal's mountains are not important only to Nepal. The Himalayan system feeds rivers, ecosystems and communities across Asia.

What we learn here could ultimately protect millions far beyond our borders.

You have repeatedly challenged humanity to think bigger.

So today, from a small country in the Himalayas, we are asking you to do the same.

You are investing extraordinary resources to help humanity build a future on Mars.
