An apt time to repost this op-ed I wrote w/ Jen Coffey of ANJEC.
Yesterday NJ lawmakers announced rollbacks of our flood rules.

New Jersey’s FY 2026 budget could and should have been a moment of courage. Instead, the budget process cut back revenue increases and dips deeper into the state’s cash reserves, while failing to protect residents from federal cuts.

One year ago, NJ passed the Louisa Carman Medical Debt Relief Act, protecting families from the worst impacts of medical debt.

The House's cruel budget eliminates vital programs for people around the country and blows an even bigger hole in the state’s budget that lawmakers failed to adequately prepare for.

A last-minute provision in the State budget, due to be passed Monday, requires NJ to continue funding the lowest-rated nursing homes. (See p. 159) OSC reports have shown these Medicaid-funded nursing homes maximize profits by providing subpar care.
While other states build up savings to protect residents from federal program cuts, NJ took a different path:
📊 Reserves reduced to $6.8B (below recommended levels)
📈 Deficit increased to $1.5B
⏰ Preparation for federal cuts delayed

A state budget getting a vote late on a Friday night is not the kind of public transparent process that New Jersey deserves.
The people of the state deserve a voice in how their money is spent, not a last minute vote on a bill the public has not seen.

“Starting in June, the supply portion of your bill will increase. This part of your bill is shaped by PJM’s planning decisions, market structure — not by state regulators.” | Why Are Electricity Bills Rising - New Jersey Policy Perspective https://t.co/7PXD9Jdese
A multistate agency you've likely never heard of has stalled clean energy production just as AI data centers demand more electricity and your utility bills go up.
@alexfromNJ's great report outlines why you should care about PJM's inaction and how NJ can push back
This report was such a labor of love for me. I wanted to demystify this organization that most people have never heard of and explain its enormous influence on our rising electricity bills.
PJM needs to do better to help us drive down costs! Read more below >>
🚨 NEW REPORT 🚨
PJM’s delays in approving new energy projects and increasing demands from AI data centers are driving up costs for consumers — culminating in an over $20 jump on New Jersey electric bills in just a few days.

A note to NJ political leaders talking about govt inefficiency.
There aren't magical efficiencies to squeeze out of govt and usually the consultants and hucksters promising efficiency make it worse.
America just saw a huge reduction in opioid deaths, in part because Medicaid allows people to get help and treatment.
Kicking people off Medicaid will make it harder to manage and treat opioid use.
