Seeing a bunch of S&Cing, biomechanical experts, or CLA coaches chime in on wideout play.
Don’t ignore them….you can learn. Second, don’t get too worked up. They haven’t spent the time to truly understand the position. It’s a perspective.
Moving the position forward means merging coaches who actually know it with insights from these fields. That combination will only make the position better.
I find so much value in working ROA and tops of routes. Both as a player and coach.🙏
But I really see it as an extension of the weight room. A middle ground… between skill work and COD you are preparing the body and understanding those breaks….It can be counterintuitive to what you will naturally do. This takes such detailed work to dial in on… but the SKILL of it is built when you add in defenders and go live and problem solve.
As you take the practice field this football season, remember you are coaching someone’s son.
And he’s showing up with a bunch of life crammed in his backpack. It’s a heavy load.
Broken relationships, hurt, anger, abuse, addiction, confusion, frustration, and so much more.
He’s hiding behind a mask. Funny, outgoing, athletic, tough.
He needs you to coach him, set standards of excellence and to push him BUT he needs to know you care about him, you see him, you are in his corner, you have his back.
Be a transformational coach. That’s what your athletes need.

IMO, football is the hardest sport for skill development.
Real development demands a lot of tackling, blocking, getting hit, and getting off blocks…building chemistry with your teammates so you can express your skill within the system you’re in.
You have to break the game into small parts or go 11-on-11 LIVE.
That comes with fear.
Today teams develop as the year rolls on, which is the biggest reason you see some nonsense drills…Fear
