💔🕊️ Raphinha: “Sorry, tonight I don’t want to talk about football. It’s clear that I want to dedicate this win to the fans, but I want to send a lot of strength to Jesus de Miguel’s family”.
“May he rest in peace. In the end, this can happen to anyone. The truth is that it’s very tough... when we saw the news this morning, it was complicated. I’m incredibly shocked and sad”.
“In the end, you go to play a match, and the same thing could happen to you. From myself, from the club, we want to send a lot of strength to his family”.
Following the recent incident involving Owono, the Spanish goalkeeper, here is my take.
It is difficult for someone who has never played football to fully understand the risks and split-second decisions that come with the game.
I was once involved in an almost identical incident back in 2021. I was in goal that fateful day when a ball was played through to an opposing striker. I had to come out of my box, and there was only one thing on my mind: clear the ball.
My eyes were fixed on the ball, and so were his. I charged out at full speed, and the force at which we collided was almost unavoidable. I jumped higher than him, and unfortunately, my knee struck him around the chest, close to his heart.
He immediately fell unconscious. His eyes rolled back, his tongue came out, and he began making a strange sound. My heart skipped a beat. At that moment, all I could think about was that my life was over.
Thankfully, we rushed him to the school clinic. I stood there helplessly, watching my friend struggle to breathe while he was placed on oxygen. Eventually, he regained consciousness.
I will never forget the feeling I had when I saw a Snapchat notification from him that day. It was probably one of the best feelings I have ever experienced. His message simply read: “How far, bro? I heard we collided at the pitch.”
That message brought me a kind of relief I cannot adequately describe. I was grateful that he was alive and recovering.
Football is a contact sport, and risks are inherent in the game. Sometimes, incidents happen in the heat of competition without any intention to hurt anyone. What happened to me in 2021 could easily have ended differently, and that experience has given me a deeper understanding of what Owono and his opponent may have gone through.
My position is that the Spanish goalkeeper should not be criminally prosecuted for involuntary manslaughter if the evidence establishes that the collision was an unfortunate accident arising from a genuine attempt to play the ball, rather than a reckless or unlawful act.
Football is a game of passion, speed, split-second decisions and, sometimes, unavoidable collisions. Not every tragic outcome is necessarily a crime.
It’s a Sad Day💔
