Rangers opened direct fire on protesters in Poonch, Azad Kashmir yesterday, shooting at least one civilian dead, identified by name as Jahanzeb, and wounding JAAC leader Sardar Umar Nazir, who was leading demonstrators at the time. Multiple Urdu-language broadcast channels confirmed the death on Friday June 5, with one commentator stating: "Rangers personnel fired directly, Jahanzeb was martyred and Umar Nazir was wounded".

Mobile networks, internet, and telephone lines were cut across Azad Kashmir as the shooting unfolded, a tactic used identically during the September 2025 crackdown to prevent footage reaching the outside world. A special Islamabad police contingent of 1,500+ officers was simultaneously dispatched into the territory on top of paramilitary forces already deployed. A significant number of those constables reportedly refused orders to deploy, suggesting reluctance within the ranks to act against civilian protesters.

So far a protest leader is wounded, communications remain down, and federal troops are flooding into the territory, all ahead of a June 9 long march that the state has already declared illegal by banning JAAC under anti-terrorism law just days before the march was set to begin.
