Satellite images and doctor testimony reveal #Tigray hunger crisis

Satellite imagery and local reports indicate a growing hunger crisis in Ethiopia's Tigray region, exacerbated by drought and the lingering effects of the two year Tigray war. July marks a critical planting period, with farmers depending on seasonal rains to replenish dried reservoirs and irrigate crops.

Satellite images of the #Korir dam area, previously supporting 300 farmers, now show an empty reservoir and parched fields. Local farmer Demtsu Gebremedhin, who once grew tomatoes, onions and sorghum, said: "Even though our dam has no water, our land will not go anywhere. So we don't give up and we hope we will go back to farming."

Tigray officials warn that 2.1 million people are at risk of starvation, with another 2.4 million dependent on uncertain aid supplies. Thousands remain in displacement camps, unable to return to their farms due to lack of resources and rainfall.

Healthcare facilities report rising malnutrition cases, especially among children. Dr. Gebrekristos Gidey, medical director at a hospital in Endabaguna, stated: "We don't have the resources to care for all those in need," highlighting the strain on local medical services.

Here is the English translation of the video clip in Tigrinya:
“As Eritreans, you too have to support the struggle of Eritreans and the Eritrean government. We are all Eritreans; there isn’t a distinction between you and us.
• All Eritreans must know that the Eritrean government was forced into the struggle and the suffering that is being faced; it had no desire to take part in it.
• Weyane (TPLF) is an agent; it doesn’t have the strength to challenge the Eritrean government. Both in the past (Ethio-Eritrean war) and presently, it is doing the bidding of other forces which are backing it.
• The struggle of the people and government of Eritrea is also your struggle. You should be proud of it. You should understand that the Eritrean government is winning by enduring all the sanctions and challenges not against the TPLF but the world. You should be proud of it if you are Eritrean.
• One elderly man has said, “We (the people of Irob) have gotten used to unlimited democracy under the TPLF leadership. Now you are telling us that we are under your administration. But you won’t be able to tolerate our ways.” This talk is what continues to be propagated. When we tread on this land of martyrs, we tread on it softly. But what has been coming from this side (TPLF) is very much despicable. You are people. But this is Eritrean territory. If you are Eritreans, you have to defend against what comes from the other side and collaborate with the Eritrean army.
• What is being reported is that there is no one from Irob who is providing information or collaborating with the Eritrean army. We will investigate it.
• The other thing is, it is being said that the Irob, although they consider themselves as Eritreans, have disagreements with the Eritrean government regarding humanitarian aid and the national service. But if you are Eritreans, whether you like it or not, you will have to go through the things that every Eritrean experiences.
• During the armed struggle, fighters who joined the Eritrean struggle from Irob have done their national duty and been martyred. Although, during the war, the land (of Irob) may, at different times, have switched hands between Eritrea and the TPLF, you know that your children and brothers have paid sacrifices for Eritrea during the armed struggle.
• If there is anyone who believes they are Ethiopian, the Eritrean government will not force anyone to remain here. But this territory belongs to Eritrea. And Eritreans reside on Eritrean territory. And Eritreans must abide by Eritrean rule like the other (Eritrean) people. If there is famine, you should starve like everyone else. If a few grains come, then you divide it with them and live like that. There will not be any preference.
• Regarding security in particular, lawlessness has been prevailing. They come from Adigrat and spend the night here; they go from here and spend the night in Senafe. And you don’t report this to us. Unless you provide information, the social service that you have been asking will not be provided. If you defend your homeland and your area, adequate social service will be provided as it will be able to continue preserving its peace. If you don’t collaborate, however, your demands will not be addressed. So, who is going to suffer? It is you who will suffer.” 1/2👇

#Ethiopia: #Tigray Interim Admin. President tells visiting #US #Senate members need for full implementation of Pretoria Agreement

Getachew Reda, President of Tigray Interim Regional Administration (TIRA), told members of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee who are in the Tigray region that the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (#CoHA), requires great efforts by all stakeholders to be fully implemented.

Regional media reported that Getachew told the visiting Senate members that the people of Tigray "have not been able to enjoy full peace due to the lack of full implementation" of the Pretoria Agreement. The international community, including the US government, should help to end the suffering of the people of Tigray by ensuring the restoration of the constitutional sovereignty of the Tigray regional state and helping the return of the displaced people to their homes, the report cited Getachew as saying.

The visit by the US Senate members to Tigray came in the backdrop of recent tensions between Tigray and Amhara region governments amidst the continued lack of resolve on the status of Western and parts of southern Tigray zones, areas still under the occupation of forces affiliated with the federal and Amhara region governments.

The US government is one of the key stakeholders that facilitated the Pretoria agreement of November 2022.
